Rare scans are used to upgrade your suit - there's sort of a tutorial about it on the 2nd planet that you visit (Jorla) Hope that helps
If you go back to Jorla or Hexon, theres a conversion chamber on each of those planets and enough minerals to upgrade your suit in those caves.
