Its tricky to explain because the game is still evolving. Nothing is really set in stone yet. James just added those new controls a few days ago...
you move your thumb on the screen anywhere, basically how much you want to move the guy. so in this option there is no visible dpad.
it was more like a right left dpad, but now we are trying a semi swipe move which seems to give better control.
