Bought this yesterday and I have to say it was a absolute bargain!
That sounds like a problem with the app not the iPhone itself. Some apps are badly designed in terms of battery usage.
Battery life is excellent almost as good as having an iPad mini. Downloading apps is what sucks the battery.
I have the same problem with GameCenter and its happening with quite a few games, I would also know how to fix the problem.
