Access internet on iPhone with laptop

    A few months ago I read somewhere that it's possible to access the internet on iPhone 3G with only wired connection and a laptop that has wireless enabled. Does anyone know more information on this or can confirm a method of doing so? I'm at a hotel and my laptop has a wireless adapter and everything, but there's only a wired connection (cable from wall outlet or something I think). Thanks.

    Yep, I do this all the time with my MacBook, not sure how to do it on a non-mac, but here's the guide for a OS X.

    Plug the internet cable into the laptop, make sure you can access the net through it by opening Safari and going to your homepage.

    Now go to System Preferences, and then click on Sharing.

    On the left side there's a few check boxes, highlight Internet Sharing, but don't check the box.

    There's a few settings on the right now, in the drop down box select Ethernet, then in the checkbox below click the AirPort checkbox. If you want to password protect it, use the AirPort Options button below.

    Now click the checkbox to enable Internet Sharing. In the Internet Signal Strength bar in the top right of the screen, that usually shows you how strong the wi-fi signal is, should now show an upward pointing arrow.

    Now use your iDevice to connect to a wi-fi network as you usually would, select your laptop, and that's it! Essentially your MacBook is now a wi-fi transmitter.

    And it works, last night I used all the online features of my iPod using this.

    More or less the same as with a Mac:

    * Make sure your Notebook can access the Internet (see above).
    * Got to Network Settings
    * Select your Wired LAN connection
    * Select Properties
    * Share Connection with
    * Select your WLAN adapter
    * Et voilá

    In "network connections" there is a "1394 Connection" and a "Local Area Connection). An error occurs when I enable sharing in 1394 connection, so I enabled sharing in local area connection. However there's no "share connection with" and a window to select a WLAN adapter. I enabled wireless on my laptop, but my iPhone does not detect a wireless network.

    See the attached Step-by-Step instructions for Windows.
    If that is set up. All you have to do is create an ad-hoc Wireless Network between your Notebook and your iPod Touch/iPhone.

    Thanks for the instructions. However there is no pull-down menu on my laptop. Attached is screenshot.

    What's behind Settings in the Share Internet Connection?

    So does anyone know the exact steps for Windows XP to share connection with iPhone? I'll attach the screenshots again on my laptop.

    @Aurora: Do you already have an ad-hoc connection between your notebook and your iPhone/iPod Touch?
    And what flavour of WinXP are you running?
    I'm on XP professional, SP3.

    Sorry I'm not sure what you mean by "ad-hoc". I didn't set a connection between my laptop and iPhone manually.
    I am using XP Media Center Edition SP3.

    There are two kinds of wireless connections using WLAN:
    ad-hoc (computer-to-computer) and infrastructure (computer-to-router).
    You need to create an ad-hoc connection between your computer and your iDevice.

    Ok I see. Can you tell me how to create an ad-hoc connection? It will be between my laptop and iPhone right?

    I'll try.
    The attached pix are named 1 and 3 to 6, they may not appear in the correct order, as I found out yesterday...
    1: Select all your network connections
    3: Select your Wireless LAN adapter
    4: Properties, a new Window should pop up
    5: Select the second tap, click on Add
    6:
    a) Now choose a name for the connection,
    b) uncheck "The key is provided for me automatically" and
    c) Check "This is a computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) network...";
    d) you may check Connect even if this network is not broadcasting, this makes it easier to connect your iDevice.

    Don't change anything else, the options in tap Authentication should NOT be active.

    7. Come up with a network key (5 or 13 characters from the ASCII charset, or 10 or 26 hex digits 0-9+a-f).
    Use Key-Index 1; I found out that the iDevice does not like the other three indexes...
    You should enter a network key otherwise all people in your hotel, or at least those in your direct vicinity can acces the internet through your notebook, and I don't know what they are accessing...

    Then add a wireless connection in your iDevice:
    A. Choose other
    B. Enter the same name written exactly as in point 6)
    C. Secuirty WEP
    D. Enter the password exactly as you've entered it in 7.

    From this point onwards, the connection should be available.

    It's very weird, I cannot access the "status" page of the wireless network. Also there is no "wireless networks" tab in properties. There is only "general" and "advanced", so I cannot add a network at all... Basically I cannot continue further than step 4.
