action game ideas

    3D Shooter/Fighter (meaning real life)
    • The iPhone can be a gun or a sword, you choose before the round begins.
      - If the iPhone is a sword, make it act like a real sword against the other player
      - If the iPhone is a gun, make it so you are able to 'shoot' the other player
    • This is all done via Bluetooth
    • This is all done in real life
    • This all can be done [see iSamurai]

    There's my idea. Can be done, but it would require expertise in coding and a dev looking for a challenge. I'm not selling this idea, just throwing it out there for anyone to try.

    If this were to be made, it would need more than the proposed 3 - 4 check points. Most games don't hold my attention long enough to wait 'til each checkpoint. And if each campaign mission is 1-2 hours, thats every 20 minutes at the least - not so good. I'd say ever 4 - 5 mins. And maybe auto-save if the player gets a call or quits.

    reconsideration......................

    health packs?:
    -i originally intended the health packs to work similar to L4D
    -meaning you can only carry one and to use the health pack it takes a few secs
    -you can use it on your character or another character in your party
    -now im thinking of dropping the idea of health packs and going with items

    items:

    vitality & stats................
    -food (several food items); recovers HP
    -chi pills? or vials of ether? or something; recovers chi
    -sake? similar to steroids or pain killers gives a temp health boots or stat boost but drains chi and if you take to many your character might get drunk in which directions are reversed so if you move right you character will move left
    -any more?

    tools...................
    -traps
    -poison bombs
    -fire bombs
    -smoke bombs

    using items........................
    -i originally intended on using a item menu and item use suggestion pop ups
    -but since its a multiplayer game you need to be able to use items in real time
    -i think it could still work?
    -if not then it would probably need to have on screen buttons for the items
    -tap to highlight item and tap on screen (enemy character area) to use the item


    overall thoughts..................

    the idea for Lunar Fang was to take the L4D formula and tweak it for an anime/action JRPG atmosphere, art style and deposition and instead of zombies and FPS its got your typical RPG-ish monsters & bad guys and is a top down dual stick action RPG game for the iphone.

    plus include a Vs mode that is a 2D fighter
    and a survival mode

    Shadow Flames

    opening........................
    -its going to be a 2D side scrolling action adventure & platforming game
    -im going to cover the controls of shadow flames first which is further reiteration of the control scheme i proposed/designed for the 2D fighter here in this thread

    movement; VJ
    -within a circle sectioned off into 2 parts vertically
    -when draging/sliding the VJ around the parts sort of fade away and it become one complete circle upon which you move a smaller circle (the VJ) around in
    -lift thumb off the screen and the d-pad fades back in essentially a circle sectioned off into a right & left side vertically
    -tap on either side and you will dash or roll or somersault
    -double tap to lock in a run; touch or tap anywhere on the VJ to unlock run
    -jumping simply drag the VJ up and right or straight up or up and left to jump forwards, vertical or backwards
    -blocking; SF style?....simply move back or away from enemy and/or drag VJ away and down from enemy
    -idk about SF style blocking because there will be enemies coming at you from multiple directions so it might be a good idea to incorporate block into the meditate (see meditate section)

    action pad:
    -a circle sectioned off into two parts horizontally
    -top is punch (or quick attack combos whatever works better)
    -bottom is kick (or strong attack combos whatever works better)
    -4 flicks (2 vertically and 2 horizontally across the pad)
    -taps are different from double taps?
    -tap or double tap and hold to charge a focus move
    -what can the flicks across the pad be used for?

    dash & run attacks:
    -tap on action pad during a dash
    -tap on action pad during a run

    spin attack:
    -quickly trace the outside of the action pad
    -or make a full circle near/around the action pad

    thoughts on combos:
    -you will be able to use the VJ and variations of taps, double taps across two onscreen buttons and a total of 4 flick gestures
    -thats a lot of combos :)

    long range attacks:
    -simply tap or double tap on, near or around enemies to throw a ninja star at them
    -tap and hold on enemies for focus long range attacks

    magic:
    -4 possible magic attacks
    -swipe across enemy/enemies or empty space from your character away
    -swipe across screen towards your character
    -swipe vertically over an enemy/enemies or empty space from top of screen to the enemy
    -swipe vertically from down to up
    -hold after the swipe to fully charge move
    -then release
    -the horizontal swipes represent magic like a waterwave that shoot from your character then goes forward (from left to right)
    -horizontal swipes from right to left represent magic attacks like a waterwave that appears behind an enemy and rush towards your character (doesn't harm your character)
    -the vertical swipes can represent magic that shoots down on enemies from the sky or shoots up from the ground under enemies

    toggle button:
    -right above the right action pad
    -tap to toggle between 2 weapons/fighting styles
    -is a toggle button necessary? would it add value to the game play
    -i think it would add lots of value
    -at blacksmiths in towns you can buy weapons and weapon upgrades
    -its not like an RPG where there is multiple iterations or each weapon
    -theres only 1 kind of each weapon, but tons of weapons in the game
    -you can upgrade & customize weapons
    -so you buy a sword weapon type
    -then when you upgrade it you can turn it into a katana or a broadsword
    -when you customize it you can change its style or color at the blacksmith
    -this is better then item management i think
    -you can have multiple weapon types in your inventory but you can only equip 2 to your hot key/toggle button at a time

    meditate;
    -right above the VJ
    -tap and hold to meditate
    -recharging HP, MP and rage meter slowly
    -it also attracts monsters or more monsters when you use it
    -it can also be a block functionality
    -when holding this button with left thumb an no other buttons you meditate
    -when holding this button the bottom right action pad will change
    -tap and hold in this new action pad button which will now have a shield icon in it or something indicating thats how you block
    -slide thumb left or right to turn backwards or forwards
    -tap to do a parry?


    items;
    -item on screen button top right
    -tapping on the item bag will pause the game
    -this will bring up the in battle item menu
    -simply tap an item such as a fire bomb
    -the icon for the item will appear in the action pad bottom right and
    -the menu will fade away and you will then see your character take out a fire bomb (with game action paused) and light it
    -set the trajectory by tapping anywhere on the screen and drangging your thumb around to adjust the arc
    -then tap on the bottom right action pad to throw
    -there will be tabs to help you get right to the item you want to use
    -for health potions or ethers just tap the item your character will get the item out of his/her bag and raise it up to drink or something showing you the item is ready to be used
    -this animation should be unique to item types
    -just tap the action pad bottom right to use item
    -there will be power up items like insta fill your HP, MP or rage meters for X amount of points just by walking over them
    -and of course when your in towns or in treasure chests you will find inventory items that you buy/collect and use whenever you want

    rage aka limit break:
    -as you take damage or deal damage your "rage" meter will fill
    -when the meter is either half or all the way full you can do a rage move
    -when its ready your character will begin to "glow"
    -just tap on your character to unleash the move
    -when you tap on your character a counter begins and a sequence of calligraphy characters will appear on the screen you will have X amount of secs to trace them one after another
    -they will get harder after each one
    -after you trace a calligraphy character the timer will pause and a awesomely awesome animation will play out showing you this bad ass move
    -then the next character will appear
    -its almost like a QTE for the iphone :)
    -you will have a brief status boost after doing the rage mode


    summons:
    -ignoring the concept of summons for a sec...
    -you will collect many summons
    -you can only sync with one at a time
    -you have to sync with a summons to use magic attacks
    -these summons will affect the kinds of magic that you use and have their own attribute boosts for syncing with them
    -some summons will just appear and fight along side you as an NPC when you summon them
    -others will manifest as a weapon that you get to use for the duration of the summons
    -others will appear as objects like 3-5 flying swords that circle around you absorbing damage or dealing damage if an enemy tries to get close to you;
    -others as being the ultimate summons will make your character transform into cool bad ass monsters or beasts or something else, completely changing your characters moves and giving incremental assistance during the transformation like when you get close to an enemy it will stun the enemy or effect the enemy with a negative status effect just by hitting them
    -just tap top left on the summons icon or thumbnail whatever
    -it requires x amount of MP and it has a recharge time

    item suggestions button:
    -in between the VJ and the action pad there will be item suggestion pop ups
    -just tap to use the item it suggests

    -for Lunar Fang there def should be more then just 3-4 checkpoints
    -however only 3-4 will be accompanied with cut scenes, a change of area, and a in game shop to spend points for upgrades, and/or items on
    -the cutscences of course can be skipped by votes

    3D Action MMO thoughts....................

    anime? mystical? sci fi?

    initial thoughts:
    -character creation, customization & robust character development
    -highly stylized art style
    -army of servers and ridiculously efficient netcode for both 3G and wifi connectivity
    -well designed world and presentation
    -compelling narrative and tons of lore, deposition and substance
    -diversity diversity diversity
    -unique take on MMO
    -actiony battle system that is fast paced fun RPG ish and has lots of depth and flexibility

    game lobbies for an MMO?:
    -i have been wanting to experiment with leveraging game lobbies for MMOs
    -instead of everyone and everything implemented seamlessly in one world/mode and then distributed and scaled by servers
    -i want to leverage lobbies & game types
    -idk how this will work yet......

    initial thoughts on this unique take.............
    -if you want to jump into some PvP you just loin the VS lobby
    -its essentially the same world and content shared between all of the lobbies (with some unique content for each lobby added for good measure) its just the engine is tweaked a bit and the overall gameplay experience is dramatically different
    -a VS lobby for instance could be just a huge territories battle between the guilds, clans or whatever
    -if you want to progress in the story and do missions, side quests, and jobs solo or you lose connection, just change the lobby to offline/single player and voila its seamlessly changes
    -and if you get your connection back or have some problems with a mission or side quest and want to do co-op just switch lobbies to "party" where up to 4 players can party up and enter your world as party members
    -and dont forget quick play this will be how ppl get matched up into co-op parties


    communication is key..................
    -an in depth system of communication is essential
    -something thats easy to get the message across in real time in the heat of battle that doesn't require much typing or talking but rather a complex system of commands, assignments and alerts
    -and a system for communication talking and chatting which i call "camping"
    -camping is essentially an in game interactive chat room where you character and the characters of your friends or strangers are all chilling around a fire or campsite
    -this system is optimized for real time discussions about strategy and what not
    -while your chatting it up your characters will animate just as a gimmick to enhance the immersion into the atmosphere
    -then last but not least is organization and social networking will also play a key part in communication where group functionality will keep everyone connected and of course functionality that allows for some promotion as well

    i apologize for the lack of concrete details, these are initial thoughts and should be taken with a grain of salt. i will def try to update the thread with details as soon as i come to some conclusions. but before i make up my mind i want to wait and see what i came come up with from scratch, then do some research and look for inspiration and see if i have any last minute innovative revelations about features or functionality that would add value to a mobile 3D action MMO game, and last but not least reconsider everything multiple times just to make sure there isnt anything i completely forgot or spaced out on or any issues or flaws in the overall vision, designs and/or concepts.

    a top down action RPG game with multiplayer?

    it will use the controls i reiterated for Shadow Flames...........

    what kinds of VS game types could there be?:

    *the obvious........
    -duel (1v1)
    -deathmatch (4 players)
    -team deatchmatch (2v2)
    -what else could work with action RPG?

    *creative........
    -arena; for both 1v1 and 2v2. with prizes?
    -monsters vs hero's; 2 players choose to be one of the many monsters or bosses from the game each turn. 2 monster or bosses vs 2 characters each turn
    -max out/zero out; you get to max out 3 attributes but have to zero out 1
    -level playing field; have a selection of 4 memorable NPCs that you run across in the game, preset to same levels
    -what else?

    what kind of co-op game types could there be?
    -survival
    -reenact the final boss battle? (unlocked)
    -what else?

    how could co-op work?

    for co-op modes the maps will be soo small it wont be much of a problem

    *for campaign;
    -provide incentive to stick together like a glow that indicates stat boosts
    -special areas in the world that only co-op players can access?
    -piggy back? or turn your character into a mini fairy version of itself? that will automatically follow the other player character as they move around
    -both players can toggle between turning into a flying fairy version and back into normal version
    -players will just fly towards other player in fairy mode no matter how far apart they are
    -both players can turn their characters into mini fairy version of themselves simultaneously which essentially will just fly closer to each other then fly around in circles? or just sit there and be like "duh" once both characters reach each other?
    -gold and exp shared equally among both players

    *could use link gates....
    -your character will pull out a mystical object and set it on the ground then say some chant or some other kind of animation, the object will glow and a menu will pop up
    -if this the first link gate ever you will only have 2 options, choose local or online link gates (online will only show up if there is a solid 3G or wifi internet connection)
    -if you have set up a link gate before you will have a 3rd option; reset previous link gate
    -if you choose local you can choose wifi or bluetooh and then host or join
    -after that both devices will sync, a brief loading screen and voila one player will appear in the others world
    -online; choose invite or join
    -join will leverage matchmaking by skill, level, and progress first then look for close then any match
    -invite will allow you to invite one of your friends already in the social network layer (openfeint or plus+) or from a third party network (aka user generated spam :)

    *how the links will work..................
    -if you press the home button, accept a call, reply to a text or leave the app
    your link gate disconnects but the other players link gate stays active
    -when you relaunch the game you can jump right back into a previous gate that is still active
    -as long as the other player doesn't leave or get to far from the gate you can reset your gate and it will not need to interrupt the other player they are still connected to the server
    -or in big areas if you wander off too far from the other character for X amount of time that will also disconnect your gate (it will warn you before that happens though)
    -if both gates get disconnected, when one reestablishes the gate it will ping the other device upon which the user can accept or deny the link
    -if any player leaves the area randomly that will disconnect them from the link

    *other details......................
    -in order to follow a character into another area you must be in fairy mode
    -since its only just two players there will be voice chat if possible
    -no need for any command system
    -there will also be visual indicators of each players HM & MP and what they are doing like viewing inventory checking items, shopping ect
    -you can drop loot for other players to pick up, you can also pick back up your loot incase they disconnect or something
    -you can lend gold, items, weapons anything really simply by dropping it as loot
    -when your at a shop alone you can gift stuff for the other player and it will automatically show up in their inventory (you can also see what they have in their inventory even though they are not at the shop
    -or if you go into a shop with one player in fairy mode the other character will be able to buy items using both players gold
    -and sell items from both players inventory
    -and buy items and share them between both inventories
    -the other player will of course have to accept it before any of their gold or objects from their inventory is sold before the transaction is complete though :)

    flow scenario for above action RPG ideas..................

    when you run the app there will be:
    -a brief splash screen
    -you will automatically be logged on and welcomed
    -the game will automatically log you into your villa dashboard

    villa dashboard........
    -in your villa dashboard there will be buttons that activate pop up up menus and what not
    -here you will see your villa and you can swipe right and left to see all the villas of your friends
    -you can enter your villa by tapping on it or check out your friends villa by tapping on it
    -there will also be visual indicators on each of your friends villa like if they are playing the game right now or not or if there is anything you can interact with

    villa
    -the villa is basically a small town and a small overworld that is personal and customizable for the player
    -you can upgrade and customize your villa using gold
    -make small investments and earn gold as you upgrade your villa
    -you can even set up businesses that way you can have shops in your villa and earn gold from them and allow you to make transactions with other players that is equally beneficial like trades
    -you can set up and upgrade guilds or bars/taverns or whatnot so there is new side missions or jobs or hunts what not

    enter their villa
    -there will be shops in the villa
    -all the characters you create will be chillin in your villa, you can see them talk to them, change to them
    -you can create new characters just by walking up to X and then entering it like a shop
    -you can jump into some VS action by walking up to the X and then entering it like a shop, or co-op action
    -you can continue where you last left off in the story, game, location by simply leaving your villa at a certain exit or just tapping on a button or option in the GUI menu pop up
    -you can exit to your villa from anywhere in the game on the overworld
    -you can set up link gates in your villa
    -there may even be small jobs and quests you can do in your villa to keep it safe
    -theres an overworld that you can train or level grind in
    -you might even have a trophy chest that will let you take your trophy into your overworld and then place it on the ground do a chant and then materialize a boss that you have fought before after defeating it the trophy will appear back in the trophy chest
    -there is even a booth or place to set up that represents social media news, community and social networking stuff just enter the both to check out the latest news, post and feeds, invites, ect

    when you enter a friends villa,
    -its customizable so each villa should be unique
    -you can explore their villa
    -if they are playing a VS or co-op you can just run up into their booth thing and join them if available like going into a shop, same for co-op and what not
    -there will be banks and you can make a deposit essentially loaning money to your friend and you collect X amount of interest for X amount of time
    -you can leave messages for a player by entering their villa (or just do it from the menu)
