The Mayans had this idea that every so often the world would be reborn, and the human race would all become some kind of animal to survive the disaster, except a few who survive and continue humanity. The last time it "happened" it was a flood, and we all turned into fish except a few who were standing on some rock. Their calendar ends in 2012, but it doesn't mean that this is supposed to happen, because they believed this to happen like every 1000 years. 2000 was the last time it supposedly was supposed to kill us with earthquakes, but nope. The scientific community also came up with the fact of Nibiru, which is a comet planet that travels the galaxy. In the far roots of Christianity it supposedly comes around to bring the souls of saints and other holy people from heaven to live with the seraphim that live there, that's the whole christianity connection. People link together ALL these myths, and they assume the comet's gonna come and mess with the world and we're all gonna die in 2012 because the Mayans predicted it! which is not true because these myths (and they are myths, hellooo...) somehow got linked together. The mayan calendar ending, the end of the world? That's like freaking out because your calendar goes up until December 31 2010, and that must mean certain death! NASA has also predicted the Nibiru comet to come near here (maybe not even visible in the night sky, pretty much a large star for a few months) in 2037... sorry, wrong date. So this fuss about 2012 is basically a misconception.

Couple of things, first, Nibiru is pseudoscience and has nothing to do with any genuine scientific community. Second, NASA has several articles on their website denying any existence of the comet, here's an example: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html According to Wikipedia the origin of the rumour is as follows... The idea of the Nibiru collision originated with Nancy Lieder, a Wisconsin woman who claims that as a girl she was contacted by gray extraterrestrials called Zetas, who implanted a communications device in her brain. ...which is clearly just as mad as the story behind Scientology, so I think we'd be fairly safe to ignore it completely.
I guess, there always talking how the planets of the solar system line up and it'll change the Earths axis, causing giant waves, something like that.....
