Exactly. It IS New and Noteworthy. You just want New and Noteworthy to be pulled into a separate App, which wastes space. Horrible idea.
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but i always thought that once an app got "Featured" by Apple, that it would be good if the app got some sorta badge in the app store to denote that fact. Its nice getting featured by apple but the effects are only temporary. If badges were searchable/filterable it would allow the user to find the cream of the crop while still keeping it all in one app store. Have another store just doesn't make sense. My 2c
Add chart of developers sorted by cumulative ratings of all their apps, weigh in number of apps and number of ratings. Split "New and noteworthy" into two categories, New to show all new releases as they come out. If there are 10 similar apps or clones of an app, create a category for it, ex. "Farting Flight Simulation". Ability to see the greatest hits over time... "What game was topping the charts in May 09, etc."
You miss the point, New and Noteworthy, selected, hot games, etc are ALL choosed by some guys behind the App Store. There's no quality control for polished games here, just a human choice. And that's the sad part because, in two word, you must be lucky or "know the guy " Yes, App Store Premium may sound stupid but, again, it's just for having the great polished games, I'm not saying the best of the best. It's only the customers to decide what games are finally good or not, not Apple. Apple must only control the quality. I really like your idea, much more then the 2nd App Store to tell the true. BUT waiting for having the chance to be featured by Apple, it's truly a bad solution. Badges can be the same as the dev part in the premium idea, by asking to have a quality badge on itunesconnect, and after that, you must pass the test of quality simple ! I like it ! If fact, the badges can resolve all the issue.
I disagree entirely. I've always found the new and noteworthy selections to often be pretty good at filtering the good and polished apps from the rest. And as per "have to know the guy", I've never even heard of a dev who has that sort of direct access.
or ... Someone here at TA could make a free app that ranks the averaged scores of notable games from sites such as toucharcade, pocketgamer, slidetoplay, etc. Or an app that compiles a list of top-rated games, and new/noteworthy games. It might be tough (I'm no developer), but as far as I can tell most indie developers are more competent than apple execs. EDIT: wait, what am I doing in the Dev Discussion forum? I'm a genius. :S
While I don't think it's a "bad" idea, I don't personally see any point to having permanant badges. Apps that have the good fortune of being singled out for Apple's "New and Noteworthy" lists have tremendous visibility compared to apps that aren't. If an app can't maintain a chart position even after having had a run on the New and Noteworthy lists, the app's had it's shot as far as I'm concerned. One man's trash is another man's treasure (and vice versa). I don't necessarily have interest in even the majority of apps that Apple (or TA's staff) singles out and implicitly recommends. Personally, I'd love to have a genius feature that really did accurately reflect my interests.
That would be great!... if it developed enough momentum to become visible by average consumers in the app store. While a small problem is that consumers can't find all of the quality apps easily, the bigger problem is that devs can't get their quality apps noticed. In other words, this app would help the few people who were smart enough to pick it up, but wouldn't change much for devs unless it became a very popular app. That being said, I love the idea of compiling reputable website ratings to separate good apps from bad. This wouldn't come close to fixing the app store, but it would be a step in the right direction.
THIS, I think, would be the best addition to the App store. Like a completely personalized genius chart beside the best-selling chart. This would be beneficial to both buyers and developers. The only problem I can see with it (and possibly why Apple haven't implemented it) is because they look at the actual music data to generate iTunes Genius results, so the algorithms with games would not be quite so accurate, but I assume they would still be pretty good.
if apple did something like that it would be really great! but i don't think that is what they were thinking with the premium app store, i'm pretty sure they were thinking of a section of the app store maybe a category that would be the expensive apps made by huge developers. Apple shouldn't have let the really crappy apps in at the start and the app store was supposed to be what your vision of the premium app store. If they did make a premium app store why would people use the normal app store? apple just needs to fix the normal app store in my opinion.
