It's never been that way. Macs have always allowed the installation of software from absolutely any source, you're thinking of iOS maybe? That aside, I switched from Windows to Mac as my primary system well over ten years ago now. And I think like most people it's for the overall experience. The quality and reliability of the hardware is second to none, you don't need to take my word for it a simple google search will provide all you need to know. OS X itself I've always found a pleasure to use compared to Windows. Other than upgrading to the latest version of OS X, I've done no maintenance on my Mac since I bought it in 2012. That never happened in over a decade of working with, programming for and owning Windows systems. I'm still forever having to go and fix one thing or another on other peoples Windows rigs. But everyone is, thankfully, different. Which is why it's great to be around technology these days, there's something for everyone.
