Looks like Apple's finally about to drop the coy act this Friday, the 16th at 10:00AM PST (1:00PM EST), as they've called a press conference, presumably to publicly address this antenna issue with what we can all hope is more than just a claim that this is the future and giving instructions on how to hold your phone the "new' way. It's clearly something big for Apple to break schedule and hold an out-of-character press conference, so let's hope for something good.
I really don't think Jobs can spin this one. He doesn't dare try. Media coverage of this issue has reached critical mass and has probably been blown beyond what even Steve must have expected. He can't ignore it; it won't go away. This has become far too big for Steve to try and sweep under the rug or excuse away. My guess: While he was busy trying to deflect criticisms and make outlandish statements (whether true or not), he had some engineers figure out how to fix the problem and had possibly hoped to surreptitiously recall-by-warranty-exchange for those who complained and brought it into an Apple Store or mailed it in to be fixed. But that quiet, under-the-table method just isn't going to work anymore, not after Consumer Reports very publicly put an official stamp of suck on the antenna issue. So now Steve has to rally the press corps and do something to rectify this situation pronto. He almost has to; if Apple loses any more face, Steve will have to unzip his fly to smile.
And they're only compatible with the case specially designed by Apple, which retails at $150 a piece. And if you want to receive a 3G connection through that case, you'll have to pay 30 dollars a month.
I reckon they'll have a new revision that fixes the problem but then lots of people will be going on ebay to get the original model.
Cute. I like that one almost as much as your dead bird schtick. Waka-waka. Mindfield hasn't had a bite in weeks so I bit him. Take Mindfield's wife... please. Who's on first? Mindfield. What? No, What's on second. I'll be here all week. Tell your friends.
Here is one analyst's take on what the iPhone fix which will require tweaking the hardware and a lot of inconvenience for users. Think of it as a soft recall. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38263228/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/ On that note, I checked out the Droid X, and it's honestly a great device.
I see many refurbished iPhone 4s in the Apple store's near future... ...and not coincidentally, I see a refurbished iPhone 4 in my near future.
