Actually I have experienced 5 personally... And as i said earlier I don't think there is any phones that don't have the issue, a search on youtube doesn't show anyone that has a proper working signal when being held (if you find one I'd like to know) only people with issues, anyone here that says they aren't having the issue, I'm asking you to please post a video holding it for at least 2 min (the avg. phone call) and let's see what happens... Because I don't believe it...
Yes, because people with problems tend to have more reason to post things than those who don't. Also, that says nothing about dropped calls.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/17/htc-fires-back-at-apple-antenna-demo-with-percentage-pew-pew/ one phones seems to work with the death grip. heh. chris.
So let me see one phone that doesn't do this, I've personally owned 2 that lost signal completely and have 3 friends that I've seen do the exact same thing. So someone post one, just one video showing theirs works properly. Hodapp you said yours didn't do it, would you be so kind?
have you drove to another spot to test. to see if the signal strength makes the problem worse? chris.
I have tried it in numerous areas (Home, work, the bar etc.) and the same thing happens all the time. Also I live in FL which has pretty much great full bar 3g coverage. The longest it took for one of my friends to lose complete signal was close to a minute and a half of holding it... Both mine take an average of 35-45 seconds to lose complete signal...
ok. should be interesting if they do not get the problem fixed from a hardware level before new phones are shipped to new country's who signal may not be great what kind of user feed back apple will get. i live in arizona the phoenix valley, i think we get good signal too.. as most people i know have the iphone.. old model.. not sure if they have upgraded yet.. they not the type to go out and wait in line for a new toy, they would wait a few months.. or a sale. chris.
Well that depends on how he holds it and if he's using a case. Most people I know got a case day one so they don't notice an issue, like I said I would really like to see a video of someone do the "deathgrip" for one minute on a "working" phone like you say and see what happens, I'm convinced it's ALL of them having issues. The one thing that could only explain it not happening would be a persons body chemistry may react differently like hodapp stated earlier if I remember correctly...
Well he's right handed, so unless he death grips it with his offhand he probably won't have any problems. Of course someone could expose those connection problems on his phone. But if we use that logic in everyday life, I would be after every single product trying to prove design flaws. If you touch the back of a CD, it might not be read properly! Ohmigod! Let's go back to VHS! Does that make much sense to you? Because of one flaw, we should completely downgrade ourselves? The iPhone 4 is above and beyond all other competitors. Now, one flaw in design and pandemonium! This Nokia peice-of-shit is better than the iPhone because I can hold it in the death grip and still call people, forget about all it's other short comings! So either return your iPhone 4 and stop complaining, or get a free case and stop complaining. This whole situation is blown up beyond belief.
I'm not blowing anything out of proportion and it's that mentality that bleeds through with apple and it's fan's... The whole use a case and STFU or return it shtick. Look I have said time and time I again I use a case, it's a GREAT phone WITH A CASE... but that's what's so damn funny about the whole thing, out of the box this $300 "phone" doesn't do the main thing it's designed to do, and that's make a phone call and keep that call connected for more then 5 minutes while holding it like the average person tends to hold a phone... Maybe me and my friends are unlucky and all got bad units but I don't think that's the case, it's a design flaw plain and simple, and if you can't admit that then there's no convincing you otherwise, just like I don't think I can be convinced the same. The Nokia e71x did the exact same thing, and guess what? Nokia discontinued that model as soon as the issues were realized to be wide spread.
Yes I admit it's a design flaw, you seem to have conveniently ignored that. No I did not say 'you' were blowing this out of porportion, I was more directing it at the Media. 7-10 percent of the world is left handed. This death grip is a major problem for 7-10 percent of iPhone users. Yes that's actually a big percentage, so it's a major problem. But I honestly still don't understand why you can't return it and stop pissing your pants with rage. For some odd reason it works for my Dad. He's not going on a forum screaming his head off "OMG IT WORKS GUYS IT ACTUALLY WORKS HOLY SHIT".
If you don't like a case which I don't mind one really, it is possible to just take it off and put back on for calls and other data needed material on the phone. O and the palm pre is the worse piece of shit ever! No, but really it is.
You guys obviously mis-interpret my general emotion about the whole thing, I'm quite far from "raging", more or less disappointed, and even more so with how apple handled the entire thing. I wouldn't have even known about the issue myself if I didnt read/hear about it because I use a case. BUT there are a lot of people that prefer no case, I know a few myself. And when apple comes out with a phone a lot of emphasis is put on the design and usually one of the main selling factors. So I don't think I'm blowing anything too far out of proportion, apple designed a defective phone, you said so yourself. Hopefully they fix the problem for their international ship date, or everyone will have to buy a case (vouchers only good til sept. 30). Or be forced to "mind the gap". And the reason I'm not returning mine is I'm stuck in between a bit of a rock and a hard place. I sold my 3GS, I was out of contract and now if I return I'm forced to exchange for another 3Gs and another 2 year contract. Or one of at&t's crappy droid selection. And to be honest seeing as how I've invested over $300 in some pretty awesome games, I'm pretty much stuck. BUT like I said it does work with a case and I plan on using a case all the time anyways so here I am...
I've said many times, the phone is great! I really love it, but really apple? Just fix it. I'm really interested in if there are units that don't do it but I don't know, if so I want one...
I've read they may have already found a fix possibly to add to the newer units... How true that may be, well it is the interwebs so you never know. But I don't see how they couldn't add a rubber coating or something maybe? And not like a bumper, more like a thin strip of silicone or something? I don't know but I think apples a good company and has people working on it 24/7 so we'll see, but looking at their response I'm not so sure...
I wouldn't take any rumor as hopeful news and that would also defeat the purpose of the entire conference Apple just had. They just recently put out job ads for 3 antenna engineers and chances are that next year's model will offer an improved design to offer better reception.
