I wouldn't be able to make a call on which is better between Euphonics and Ellatron because I really like them both for different reasons. Euphonics is an easy app to instantly make some soothing and relaxing music and it does have some pretty nice features to modify the beat. Ellatron is the iPhone version of the 70's Mellatron which was an organ type instrument used in music made by bands such as Steppenwolf (born to be wild) and even the Beatles (strawberry fields). It's actually a really versatile app and you can get a very wide range of tones out of it.

I removed ToneBoard from my idevices until it's improved.

Chordica is a little cheesy. It's a guy from Japans app that uses his "scoreless music method" system and he's pretty much just trying to get people to take his classes. He's got a whole bunch of videos on youtube, just search. I thought there might be some potential since it does put out some pretty nice sound but it's coming off my idevices soon I think.

Nlog is free .... it's worth it :)

These are the apps I use:

BeatMaker, Noise.io, Star Guitar, VirtualDeck, DigiDrummer, Mixmeister Scratch (Nothing serious, just fun to use with your own music, I would reccomend VirtualDeck for the real deck experience), MooCow Music's Pianist, Guitarist, Bassist, and Organist.

BeatMaker is simply amazing, and I would refer it to anyone of any genre of music.

I will shamelessly advertise my own personal music, to get a simple idea of what it can do. ;)http://soundcloud.com/booch138 Keep in mind that my track "Drag Me Away" wasn't done ENTIRELY on Beatmaker, but the beat, bass, and everything of the track was. I just added synths and effects with M-Audio's Sessions program. I know its not the best music ever, but you get the point :D It's not normally what I do, I am more a Progressive Metal/Melodic Death Metal guy. But I listen to all sorts of music, and I am currently in a Punk/Psychobilly/Metal/Western/Surfer/Rock band.

Intua has it's own forums, and it would be cool to see more talented folks posting some of their tracks. I like hearing out what people can do with this machine. What I do most with BeatMaker, is I make even thrashy industrial beats, or thrashy death metal sh!t and I play along with my guitar (Real one, not an app lol)

Noise.io is nice, but only for finishing touches for me. I can never start a song innitially from Noise.io. Same with Star Guitar, but its a lot more simple than Noise.io.

Virtual Deck is cool to upload songs on and play around with them as if you were on real turn tables, the experience is quite nuts. I personally dig the hell out of it, and would suggest it to anyone with DJ Skills, or if you are just interested in learning the gist of it. Not saying you will learn how to do everything a DJ can do with this program, but damn near. Plus its fun and you can upload any of your songs via their uploading site. Its seemless.

DigiDrummer is nice, I like to record beats and play along with my guitar, but thats about it. It has no exporting function, which is sad because personally I think DigiDrummer has the best sounding drum sets on the app store, from what I have heard.

The MooCow Music's Pianist, Guitarist, Bassist, and Organist apps are awesome. Its cool that you can record your songs for later playback, but I wish they could at least work with each other, since you can't even export them as WAV files, or even Midi. But alas, if you record with the guitarist, thats all you get. Same with the others (Excluding bassist, you can't record anything on that). They are fun to use apps but if you are serious about trying to make actual music on the iPod, BeatMaker and Noise.io are your best bets. If you are Head Strong serious about making music, I would get a real instrement and music recording program on the PC. I am a musician in real life, and I love that BeatMaker allows me to at least make the beat of what I want, say at work, and be able to upload it to my computer, upload it in my Sessions program and dub over it with keyboard synths and guitars. It's truely amazing.

Wow .... thanks for sharing! I really liked them all .... quite a lot actually. I bookmarked your site so I can listen to them all in their entirety later.

I'm not a musician but I like making music. My creativity is what you see below in my signature for fine art but I also do a lot of video work and I make a lot of my own music for the soundtracks in short videos. For many years I've been using Garageband. I love making all kinds of music from hip hop to trance to just plain pretty melodies. If I was younger I would so work hard at becoming really good at electronic music but for now I will just enjoy it as something I can "play" with and have fun.

I don't have many games on my iPhone or iPod Touch so I frequent this apps forums a lot. I have really enjoyed the participation that this particular thread has gotten and I too, as the poster a few posts above, hope that we continue to post and share here.

Wow! Thank you for the compliment! That really means a lot to me. And as huge fan of abstract arts and the like, I checked out the abstract section of your art, and wow great job. All those photos you did yourself? Cause that quite amazing work you got there lol (not just the abstract, but the photography as well)

I work a simple data-entry desk job, but my dream job is to focus more on music, and actually create music for video games. Like, I would love nothing more. If you know any developers that are seeking a musician that can make a tone for pretty much any genre of music, have em look me up cause I am interested. I would need to create a larger, and broader portfolio, but I guess I should work on that!

I really like the feedback of this thread too. Its too bad there isn't a "TouchArcade.com" for music apps. I mean this thread is tight and I'm glad there is at least this, but I am sure there are more app musicians out there!

well i am just an enthusiastic amateur but thats why i wanted to keep this thread alive and kicking, cos there is some good stuff out - but they often tend to be expensive (compared to the other stuff) which is why its nice getting a bit of feedback about them.
TonePad ....free well grabbing that and after having watched the videos have picked up Euphonics.

I agree that its a major shame that the rest of the music apps dont go the same way as Noise.IO and export so that you can use what you create in Beatmaker. It means instead of having a complete music generation in your iphone you have a lot of music games / demos. Nice to place but you cannot do a lot with them

Exactly. That's why I am not sure why more of them don't export in WAV or MIDI. They would get SO MUCH more playability out of them, at least from me. I am no professional either but I know how to make a few songs, and the apps in the store are more than capable of working together, if only they could export to WAV. I mean like I said, the other apps are cool to play with, but I mean I dont use them to replace real instrements in a band, and I would only use them to make music on the iPod. Why wouldnt they? Is is hard to be able to develop and engine that can do that (I am no developer, so I have no idea)? I mean even if they couldnt export DIRECTLY into beatmaker (Like Noise.io does) at least give an export to the comp, so I can do the work from there. I'm sure Intua (BeatMaker) and Amidio (Noise.io) have a agreement with each other that only they can export to BeatMaker, but like I said, straight to the comp is fine with me too.

Booch138 .... do you live in Arizona?

I agree about the Wav exporting. It's a hassle but I just plug into Garageband then export and convert to Wav.

I'm also glad you like my galleries .... it's what I really enjoy doing but in the real world for real money I'm an offroad photographer .... in fact I'm on my way (having left Arizona) to Lake Tahoe to work the summer on the grand daddy of all offroad trails .... The Rubicon Trail.

Added this morning to my ever growing list of music apps
TonePad as mentioned above a few posts &
WaveSynth. This one may replace a couple of other apps, well worth the $1.99 in fact it's actually worth more ..... at least to me. Huge library of sounds with a lot of user control.

Yup, I live in Central Arizona, in a sh!t-f*** town called Coolidge. My Bandmates live in the neighboring town, Casa Grande, which is a little bigger, but still sh!tty (Our location is about 30-40 miles south of Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe/The Valley in General lol). That sounds like a really fun (and rewarding) job. I have a couple friends who used to live in AZ that left in pursuit of a Photography career. One lives in Oregon, and takes pictures for some museum (Lost contact with him, last I heard) and one lives in Wisconsin, and she actually goes on tour with some bands (Namly in the Warped-Tour Scene) and does Photography with them.

Yeah I use M-Audio Sessions, which is pretty nice. I just plug in my iPod and record from it as if I am recording a guitar if I really needed to loop synths through, but thats why I like exports better. If its WAV I just upload it in the song and overdub like hell ;)

It would just be cool it all the apps exported in WAV. I'm really lazy ^.^ hhehehe drive safe to Lake Tahoe, and have fun. Its beautiful over there... but really f***ing hot as of late. God damn global warming.

New in the app store Instant Beat $2.99

I haven't made the purchase .... just might wait until someone TOFTT or until there's some reviews up. The developer does have a demo video on his website http://www.instantbeat.com/

    Another Tenori-on wannabe

Here's yet one more Tenori-on wannabe app, a new one called Soundgrid (I hope the link works). This one has many features missing from the others: 8 layers, different sounds including a drum kit, 8 switchable 16-step patterns per layer... and each pattern can be resized to anything between 1 to 16 steps - great for complex rhythmic patterns! The sounds are okay, and the dev has promised soundpack import and many other cool features. Priced $.99 at the moment.

I almost did not buy this, as there are so many half-cooked attempts done already, but the feature list was so convincing that I had to check it out. Glad I did, as SoundGrid feels a LOT more usable than the other similar apps. I'm only missing the tempo adjustment, but the dev told me it will be added.

    Verdict: Recommended.

Seems a bit rough around the edges .... needs a lot of work but at least the developer got my 99 cents to help the cause and maybe improve this.

If you buy it, let me know what you think of Bare Drums .... I saw it come up this morning and checked out the videos but I have soooo many drum apps that I'll only buy one now that really has a lot more or different to offer.

I did pick up Tongue Drum (I have a real one made by Steve) and it's very good. Also picked up Emergence which is very trippy and I love trippy (replaces the psychedelic drugs I don't do anymore).

suspect i am going to ignore Bare Drums at the moment - also have enough drum apps - it brings nothing new appart from the low latency - which as i am not playing live does not make a lot of difference to me, but i will kepp an eye out for reviews about it :)

I picked up a few more fantastic music apps:

Organist - The sound is excellent. It is limited to 4 sound banks, but the church organ and the theater organ (they call it electric) are top notch. There is an option for dual keyboards, allowing 4 full octaves on screen, although depending on the size of your fingertips, you might not effectively use that much. I find that 10 keys per keyboard is a good amount for my sausage fingers, allowing three full scales, although I usually don't go for a full run of keys so that I have lower and higher registers. I really like how it handles the entire fretboard. There are button sliders and tabs allowing you to quickly move a couple of notes up or down from your current range or quickly advance to your next full set of keys. There is a key lock that ensures that you won't accidentally change the keyboards while playing. You can record and overdub though and that's another plus. It will allow you move rearrange your keyboards for the overdubbing and the original recording will stay in the same register. What it won't allow you to do is overdub with a different sound bank. It's not a traditional synth, so there aren't many technogadget frills, but all in all, Organist is great. I find myself turning down the tv volume and providing a soundtrack, old timey style.

Drum Meister - Awesome customization! You can arrange the components of kit to your liking. This really sealed the deal for me. It's a nice kit featuring bass drum, snare, hi-hat (open and closed), four toms, plus ride, crash and splash cymbals. There are a lot of little things that make this kit work. Recording and playback is simple. You even have the option for control the bass drum or cymbals with motion control. The sound is fantastic and the cymbals really ring out well. Playing along with your ipod music is great as well. Drum Meister has excellent, responsive touch control and is highly recommended.

iKoto - This sounds great and is really easy to play. The touch controls are very responsive and the pitch bend means that this sounds pretty authentic. There are a lot of preset tone scales that you can use and an option that shows the key of each string. The recording feature is also pretty neat. You can play along with your recording. I haven't messed around with exporting yet, but it appears that you can output your recordings as wav files. iKoto is really outstanding and is relaxing and very fun to play.

    Thanks!
