I cant figure out which one i thought was better. They are different movies but also very much alike. Sure avatar was visually awesome but so was D9. I think im gunna go with D9 on this one since avatar kinda felt like watching the cinematics of a video game the whole time. But both movies were amazing what do you guys think
Avatar looks really dumb from the trailers, so the good reviews surprised me. I’m sure I will like it a lot, especially since it will be my first real 3D movie. But it’s not the same KIND of movie as district 9, and so it’s hard to compare. District 9 was just outstanding. The development of the characters from the beginning to the end is surprising and very well-acted, and the FX are flawless. (Whereas Avatar, despite reviews claiming otherwise, still resides in the “uncanny valley” for me along with Polar Express and Beowulf and the new Christmas Carol. Even in the trailers, which should be forgiving since I’ve viewed them small, there’s something not quite right in the faces. Now, Avatar’s faces may be a lot better than those other examples, but my brain still picks up some kind of problem. Which won’t stop me from liking it though!)
I'm just hoping James Cameron has tapped into whatever vibe he had going when he did Terminator 2 and Aliens. If he make two classic examples of modern cinema, he can make a third.
Avatar hands down. Seeing it in IMAX 3D was so amazing... This is what going to the movies is all about.
I don't see a need to pit them against each other but... ...The animation is terrific in Avatar and I don't agree that it falls under "Uncanny Valley". It gets a bit boring in the middle whilst D9 keeps the pace up the whole film. I think I preferred the whole gritty nature of District 9, but they are both amazing films, if you like sci-fi, action, or pretty much any genre watch them both
They were both GREAT. Both had great stories. Avatar gets the win just for the visual effects. Wish I had brought some mushies for that party!!
Avatar has far more in common with Dances With Wolves and The Last Samurai than District 9. In the end though, all the great FX can't hide the cardboard characters and by the numbers story that falls apart in the last third of the movie.
The up and coming popular meme is that Avatar is nothing but Dances with Wolves in space. Its essentially true, its the same story told once again just in a pretty environment that takes place on another world with a Private Military Corporation standing in for the US Army. District 9 on the other hand is intelligent, provocative, insightful, and action packed. It tells not just the story of its titular characters Wikus van de Merwe and the 'prawns' but also an examination of the human condition by using the existentialism of the science fiction genre. To say avatar is greater because of visuals is OK at best, but to say its greater because of story is ignorant. District 9 was as much a story of its main characters wish to find home and comfort as it was an examination of humanities tendencies towards race, culture, and self superiority. Avatar at best is a new-age-tree-huger-Pocahontas-in-space film that looks pretty with the old adage of starting as the bad/indifferent guy ending as the hero. Not bad, but not significantly relevant like District 9.
Try not to be a douche bag you whole life. I'll be more specific so even you can understand. I hadn't even heard of spill.com until you mentioned it. Seeing the movie was all I needed to draw those comparisons. Contrary to what you might think, not everyone spends their entire life looking for reviews of movies. There are those of us still capable of forming our own opinions. So before you accuse someone of not giving a website it's due, remember it could actually be their own fully formed opinion. I will refer you to a review a friend did write, which is about as honest a review of this movie as you'll find anywhere: http://nihilistic-kid.livejournal.com/1411424.html
That's not a review it's a rant. A review that goes against the majority to that extent isn't helpful at all, if someone reads it they could end up missing a film everyone else loves and they would have loved too.
Really different movies, but I would vote Avatar. I would wager that almost anyone can guess the outcome of this film in the first 5 to 10 minutes of watching it and get it at least 90% right. Even if they haven't seen or heard anything about it. But thats ok, the point of this movie is not the ending, but how the story gets there. I'm not sure about the replay value of Avatar, but I will see it again and if I still really like I'll see it a few more times. At least thats my take on it.
Avatar is very enjoyable, but I think District 9 is more interesting, the documentary style, visual effect, story...
