September 15, 2009 - Normally, I am not into videogame football. I have tried Madden and the NFL 2K games over the years, but get rather frustrated by how complex the controls are or how merciless my rivals end up being. However, mobile football is a totally different story -- especially iPhone football. Because the scope of the game is a touch smaller, I can really get a handle on the game and concentrate on the fun fundamentals of moving the ball up the field. The upcoming Backbreaker: Tackle Alley goes even more arcade and I'm digging it all the more for doing so.

The goal in Backbreaker: Tackle Alley is still to get the ball into the end zone, but instead of worrying about a whole team, you only follow a runner as he screams downfield. Incoming defenders try to tackle you left and right, coming in at different angles and speeds. You must avoid their dives and lunges with jukes, spins, or pure speed. And as you approach the goal, why not through in a little showboating to really make your score go down hard?

Controlling Backbreaker: Tackle Alley is as simple as tilting your iPhone forward to start running. Virtual buttons along the edges of the screen initiate moves, like spins to each side or a speed burst. During a speed burst, you cannot make any special moves, so only use it when you are convinced the next defender will not pile-drive your chest with his helmet and, well, break your back. Within just a few tries to reach the goal, I had the controls down pat. But the game had zero qualms turning up the heat to make me work for those touchdowns and point bonuses. After a few runs, you must really watch the trajectory of incoming defenders and react with more than just a quick juke, you must steer either toward or away and then initiate the move to avoid a tackle.

Using different moves in a single run down the field increases an overall combo. Showboating also bumps your score, but you need to actually reach the goal for the points to count. If you spy the edge of a defenders helmet catching up with you, you may have to stop showboating and start sprinting to reach the end zone on both feet. You lose you showboating points to do this, but that's better than getting sacked and losing one of the four tries you're given.

There are two ways to play Backbreaker: Tackle Alley. The challenge mode offers five different series of runs down the field. The survival mode strings all of those challenges together. How long can you last?

So far, I'm enjoying my time with the game. It's a fun, simple arcade-style game -- the kind of game the iPhone really excels at. Plus, it looks great. The dynamic camera that follows the runner and tilts along with your phone is very effective. I love the way you can see a defender streaking toward you and then arc out of his way as the camera follows. The defender dives and passes right in front of the screen as you spin out of the way. The tackle animations are also quite good. Being smashed into the Astroturf looks decidedly painful. The game will be out very soon, so you too can soon crack a few vertebrae in Backbreaker: Tackle Alley.
