Yeah, for a while I noticed that whenever I try to update my iPod, it says, before anything else happens "Backing up". What does that mean exactly? Because whenever I wait for it to "Back it up" it takes waaaay too long, in fact, it didn't even move much after an hour! [So I just click the X and skip it] Is that ok to do?
It's what it says it is... creating a backup of your iPod. Then if anything goes wrong with your device you can restore it from that without losing too much. I don't know why it takes over an hour though, unless you've got a ton of stuff on there... mine only takes about 5 minutes.
I have a lot of apps and songs, but that's pretty much it. (~900 songs, ~7 pages of apps) I'll just wait the while this time and maybe it will be faster the next.
I think if you try to back up everyday, the wait time becomes shorter? I'm one of those who used to bypass backup when I wanted to sync a new game. I've just started back up every few days recently.
It's an incremental backup - if you haven't backed up in a long time, be prepared to wait. Also, take a look at your apps - some apps that save a lot of small files take forever to backup. I had one app do this to me: SID Player - it originally downloaded and saved each song as separate files and gave me 30+ minute backups, now they use a database file and it has no such problem. If you don't have many apps, you might try deleting one or two and see if that makes a difference. I've got 500+ apps and a decent amount of music, and my backups only take more than a couple of minutes if I don't sync for a while...
Looks like I'm about 25 minutes in and about a fourth of the way there... I should have known better..
I back up pretty much every day. Takes about 1-2 minutes I'd say, sometimes shorter. I have 11 pages of apps. Over 1900 songs, though I don't know how much songs factor into the back up time.
