So THAT'S the secret... but can you call any game where you have to force yourself to play, good?

Diablo is a hack 'n' slash according to many sites (and I also think that) too.

I got it from playing the game. I actually did calculations.
There were 2 monsters right outside of town in the grassy map. (One rat, one goblin)
There were 4 monsters in the ruins area ahead of the grassy map. (One boar, two goblins, one rat)
There were around 3 monsters in the cave (those skeleton things).
That's an average of 3 monsters per map, not counting the giant troll that can't be killed by a low level character in the cave.
Of course, I lost interest after the cave part, so I can't say about ahead of that point, but I assume it's going to be a similar monster rate.
The game would be more fun if you could at least see one monster around you at any time, so you're not walking around in empty field all day.

You're misunderstanding me... What I was TRYING to say, is that it's a STEEP learning curve. There are a lot of elements involved in playing the game; so it's certainly not your casual RPG. You need to give yourself time before you understand everything there is to know about the game. So if YOU have it Ranko, but you didn't like it. I would suggest that you gave it some more time, or use the in-game guide to help you get started. I hope that cleared that statement up :)

I think we're splitting hairs here. Diablo (with Dungeon Hunter, Untold Legends, Baldur's Gate, Dungeon Siege, etc) is usually classified interchangeably as either a hack 'n' slash RPG or an action RPG. To quote from Wikipedia:

A standard hack 'n' slash like Gauntlet (or God of War, or Hero of Sparta) usually has little character customization, limited items, and only the slight veneer of a story.

Hey like I mentioned before, if you are having a hard time getting started in the game, there is now a built in guide that tells you what to do! Maybe you'll give it another go!

Monster spawning is randomized in Ravensword. You can encounter two monsters one time, six or seven another time. I completed the game several times during beta testing (and I'm working my way through again for the update), and I can tell you for certain that there's no set amount of monsters per map.

I'm not trying to argue with your overall impression of the game, by the way -- it's your right to think of it what you will.

Vay is actually a port of a 16-bit JRPG if that's what you want.

Oh it's random? I thought it was preset, since the numbers were similar every time I entered the field maps (ie, if it wasn't 2 monsters, it was 3). I'm just saying there should be way more monsters altogether, to make leveling up easier. When I played, I had to go back to town and go back out lots and lots of times just to fight more monsters. Without doing that, there's no way my character can advance into other maps since the monsters are this game are ridiculously strong.

the number of spawned enemies is determined by what device you have.
As many a 3 at a time will spawn in any given area (and respawn depending on how fast you kill them) on a 3GS or 3rd gen touch.
2 for 2nd gen devices, and 1 at a time for first gen devices.
In the forest there are actually 5 different beasts. Goblins, rats, boars, and then the Troll baby, and Cave beast.

In the update we're submitting soon theres an area where you can "level up" quite a bit

I think this is going further and further from the original theme of the thread... but quickly:

You probably want to stay away from the snowy mountains (except for the settlement) and the graveyard until you've leveled up considerably. You can pick up a quest in the forest that takes you to the Talon Cliffs and gives you plenty of Imps to kill (they're a bit stronger than the Goblins, but not by much) and should help you gain a couple of levels. For some of the stronger monsters, the best way to take them down is to use blast arrows, which you can purchase from the wizard in town.

There's a couple of walkthroughs on line -- you can find a link in the main Ravensword thread.

Back on topic: my favorite actual RPG in the platform is Undercroft, though The Elven Chronicles is growing on me.
