heeey. So I got an iPad. It's really cool and fun to play with, but it doesn't fulfill any of my needs at the moment, I got it because I'm a developer. The whole UI is way too similar to the iPod touch in a lot of ways, and none of the games I've played so far have been that impressive, especially when compared to their iPhone counterparts.

I think the biggest problem with it though(especially for people on this forum) are the prices. You can no longer afford to try out lots of little games for cheap and just hope they're good, instead, everything is super expensive. I recommend waiting a few months(or even a year), to see how it improves. It's going to take a few KILLER apps(which will come eventually), before it's really worthwhile. At the very least, wait until after the OS 4.0 event on Thursday before you make any decisions, but even if they do announce multi-tasking and stuff, it still won't make it that much better.

The really cool thing about the Slate is that it works with regular PC programs like the Firefox web browser, skype, and even itunes. This is a positive and negative thing at the same time. This means since it's a real PC it's more vulnerable to virus and you might have to deal with system requirements and compatibility issues everyone hates  The great thing about the iPad is that everything works smoothly since the apps are designed for them. With that being said I do think the pros outweigh the cons with the Slate though (at least on paper) :)

So I just extracted a digital comic book I own into images and uploaded it to my iPad

That was a screenshot from the device showing of what the image looks like :) Once a good cbr uploader comes out for the iPad then it will really make my purchase worthwhile

One of the only uses I see for the iPad is travel. It seems like the perfect travel companion to me. Watch movies on a decent sized screen on a plane, do some last minute/emergency/regular editing to presentations and documents while away from your main computer, check email, read books, and browse the internet on a decent sized screen. Pretty much it is a slightly more travel-ready device than a laptop. As a result, if you own a decent, reasonably portable laptop, then there is no reason to get an ipad unless you just love new gizmos.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment...

Couldn't a netbook or a Macbook Air fulfil the same needs with less holding involved?

I think I'll nominate this as the most pointless thread, no offense

But if you can create a user name and make a thread I'm certain you can do enough of your own research on both iPad models to make a clear decision on wether to purchase any of them.

If all you wanted was a good conversation about the ipad, apple has stores with employee's in them that will convince you to buy one while talking to you about the product.

No apple store near you? well since you have an Internet accessability I'm assuming you have a phone and apple has a number with little representitives on the other end of the line that get paid to talkand convince you to buy an iPad.

    So in short buy one

the wifi model ifyou keep it at home
3g model if you want to take it places that do not have wifi

    presto!

Absolutly, considering MacBook air can close and cover the screen, and run
    OS X

iPad is a good way to be connected when you need a little more than a phone and less then a netbook.

That's a small margin but when your just on the couch and always want a reachable always on and connected coffee table device it's perfect.

Me andmy girl are always looking up or asking questions about stuff on tv like Discovery and want to bring up the web.

She gets to show me the wedding rings on her sites by just flipping instead of passing or turning around a laptop wich could be shock damaging.

Keep in mind that most of us here already have an iPod or iPhone maybe even two of each. There's many that don't have an idevice at all so that's a bigger margin for people with a Dell desktop and a cricket razor...ipad is a great solution for that demographic

I've seen my share of pointless threads, but I disagree with you that this one qualifies. Frankly, the discussion is a valid one for two reasons:

    1) While the iPad sold 300K over the weekend, that is on the low end of the sales forecasts
    2) More than 75% of those sales were to existing Mac users

If anything, this indicates that most of the public which is mostly the target demographic that fanboys keep talking about is not buying and have serious questions about the iPad. Don't get me wrong, the iPad is a sleek device for what it is (I know since I have one), but for many, this is no more than a neat toy in its current configuration.

my nomination is based on the abundance of similar threads in this very forum, not to mention the request to post sources to video when it's obviouse the op is cabable of doing himself. As if we can convince someone to buy something. When it comes down to it....it's your desicion and when your in the store post 17 won't even enter your mind.

Well then, I guess companies should stop paying for ads and commercials since obviously, they can't convince me to buy anything?

Also, this thread was EXTREMELY usefull for me, because Big Albie came on and mentioned the HP Slate, which, I have decided to wait for/ purchase since it seems a lot better than the iPad.

So, while it might be "pointless" for you, it wasn't for me, and honestly, I could care less about you so it's a win-win for me.

Well said. I don't think a lot of people realise that the simplicity of the iPad, and the fact is uses iPhone OS instead of OSX, IS its virtue! It's faster and easier to use because it uses a stripped down operating system. Even a grandmother could use it. You just turn it on and push a button. It doesn't get much easier than that.

This is how all Apple products and services are designed. Before PC's and MP3 players and Smartphones used to be a pain in the butt to use. But with ipods and iphones, the interface is so intuitive to use and you don't have to be well versed in technology to use the products without a headache. The same goes with shopping with the Apple store. The buildings have a very clean, open look to them and you don't ever have to deal with looking around in isles or even waiting in line for cashiers.
