Well people had been expecting and speculating about what Infinity blade could be nearly 6 months before it came out. Epic citadel certainly did not help keep expectations down. Early marketing can be a double sided sword. Too much hype can lead to much disappointment. Obviously the game still had an outstanding release, but expectations where simply to high. Its not that people thought it should be deep, its that they had expected it to be a deep, ground-breaking "unreal" game months before they even knew the name of it.
There are plenty of companies that succeed by only catering to a very specific niche. It is definitely not the key to every successful business. That's not to say it can't be beneficial in some cases. I'm sure with regards to Chair, they'll do fine whether they make an RPG or FPS or some other game.
Not to bring up an old topic, but has anyone heard anything else about this game? I have loved Infinity Blade for the past 6 or so months, especially with the constant stream of updates. But I'm hoping that this game (if it even exists) will be similar to Infinity Blade but with free roam and a little more depth. Anyone have any info?
Yeah, because a company that makes $10 million in profit with a game will definitely never produce another one on the same platform . That Chair is working on another iOS game is almost a certainty. Whether it's an RPG, a shooter, or what have you, who knows. But I'm sure we'll hear word soon.
+1... plus, sometimes rumour mine rumours come true... they arent always just a hunch or its fake... maybe it IS in development but theyre not saying anything to the public...
Here's my speculative opinion... Infinity Blade received it's last update recently, which added Arena and new gear. There is no more "coming soon" within the game, I will now assume the Infinity Blade is "complete". iPhone 5 was not unveiled yesterday, therefore a September release/unveil after/during their annual iPod/music keynote sounds reasonable. I believe September is when we will see iPhone 5 make it's emergence, as well as a new iPod Touch and the release of iOS 5 a day or so before iPhone 5 is available. Now, Chair and Epic games first unveiled Infinity Blade/Epic Citadel, alongside Gamecenter at the start of WWDC last year. During Apple's keynote. Which was also where iPhone 4 debuted. If Infinity Blade, is on the shelf now...that would leave Epic/Chair a 3-4 month window to create something to show with the new iphone 5 hardware. I believe this is the case. They may even pull an Epic Citadel and release the game alongside iPhone/iOS 5. I wouldn't put it past Apple, to have this lined up for a showstopper moment on stage.
I'm sure there will be something new to follow in Infinity Blade's footsteps, but let's not crazy. 10 million is a drop in the bucket for Epic. iOS development really is just a cutsy little side project. However, the profit margin generated justifies further investment, in all likelihood, which is a good thing. If Infinity Blade had flopped, Epic might have abandoned the market. It didn't, so there's no doubt in my mind we'll see something more. I'm not sure how fully developed it will be. Only time will tell if it turns out to be more of a full-fledged game the second time around. Gears of War 3 is likely to sell somewhere between 3-5 million copies, at 59.99 a piece.
And then we're all going to have to buy the 5th gen itouch and iphones cause the game is so epic!! Perfect advertising technique!
Anyone have any info on this game since its announcement? Sounds like it could be really awesome, judging by how incredible IB was. I could definitely see this game released as a flagship title (just like IB is still featured in ipad/iphone commercials), and I'm hoping it'll be super awesome (free movement this time around, please!).
Gears will obviously make more money but took how long to make 3-4 years and costs probably 50 million to make or more. To make 10 mil and counting on something that costs very little and took very little time to make is great. I certainly hope they make more games Infinity Blade is my favorite iOS game even though I can't explain what makes it so good.
You are confusing ChAIR with Epic and profits with revenues. To give a bit of context here: EA games finished fiscal year 2011 with a $267 million loss. Anything on the plus column is a huge win both for the publisher and especially the development team -- I bet that they've made more money on IB than they ever did on Shadow Complex. As to GoW3 (not made by ChAIR), keep in mind that Microsoft is taking a huge chunk of that $60 retail price, both as publisher and in console royalties. And as was mentioned earlier, development (not to mention marketing) costs will eat up a huge chunk of the rest, and we're not even counting retailer discounts and physical production of the boxed product. It is quite possible that IB will make more profit for ChAIR than Gears 3 does for Epic.
