The charm is wearing off on this one. It's one of the prettiest games I've seen on iPhone, but like someone else said, the gameplay just isn't fully there.

I'm also having some pretty bad framerate/lag issues on my 3GS. Once it hits Tokyo or so, it gets hectic enough (based on performance, not design) that it's just not fun. It might run smoother on other devices, but it's just not cutting it on mine. :(

Well then, we'll just have to improve the game further, won't we?

Let's wait and see how you like the free version 2.0 update next week, our biggest and best update so far.

I'd love to get your opinion on this, and then we can discuss what else needs to be done for version 3.0. What'd ya say?

    cheers

I really liked those cartoony/realistic graphics and the game is fun, thanks for letting us download it for free!

Don't get me wrong, I love the game, and I definitely appreciate you making it free. Also, runners are probably my favorite genre on iPhone.

To be more constructive, my suggestion right now is to rebalance the speed and the lives. I don't really know how difficult it would be, but the game gets going so fast and gets so framey on my 3GS that it's hard to tell what's going on, much less strategize where to go in the level or enjoy the destruction. I'd like to see the later levels slowed down just a beat to give the device a chance to process and give the player a chance to make tactical choices about the alternate routes you put in. Maybe you could adjust the number of lives down to compensate or just insert a bit more danger.

Or it could just be my device, in which case the game is just fine.

Thanks again, and truly great work...didn't mean to be negative. Best of luck!

Now that would be a bit harsh, wouldn't it? :D

No, the Endless Run mode will be unlocked immediately for everyone by the free version 2.0 update next week.

    cheers

Will download and play as promised.

I think the best way to sum up my feelings on the game is that it would function much better as a lower speed platforming "score chase" than it does as a super high speed survival runner.

It would run smoother, be more accessible, the destruction would be more fun, and the roar would be used for something other than taking out the next enemy...and I would argue that it would be more addictive as you chase higher scores. Right now, once I survive a level, I don't have much urge to go back to it.

    Meant to be constructive...downloading now...

You guys should increase the speed of endless mode stage by stage. Just saying, its pretty fun though!

Edit: And how does the score multiplier work, im confused. :/

Edit 2: speed does increase. Can you guys add a cooldown meter for roar? :(

Edit 3: and can you guys update gamecenter, all the high scores for the 25 who played endless normal are 0.

    Hey flameon,

Thanks a lot for your quick feedback!

Each tail piece of Zilla that you save is counted towards a score multiplier at the end of each city:
You start the Endless Run at a 1x multiplier. If you manage to get Zilla to the end of the first city unharmed, the 3 tail pieces will be added to the score multiplier, giving you 4x. This multiplier is then applied to everything you score in level 2. Rinse and repeat.

So get Zilla through the cities unharmed and you'll score big in later levels. :D

Not sure if we want to. We don't want to clutter the screen with more GUI than necessary, and no one here has ever found such a meter to be needed.
@all: What's your opinion on this? Shall we add a cooldown meter for roar?

You're right. Really sorry for this issue, which slipped by our Q/A.
The fix is already done, unfortunately we have to submit to Apple again.
Please expect v2.0.1 to hit the App Store next week.

    cheers
    /chris

    Thanks for listening.

what i mean by a cooldown meter is like a little thing on the bottom right side of the screen that shines when you can use roar. nothing too big or intrusive though.

Well, your statement just about sums up the core ideas of the new Endless Run mode in the v2.0 update. I couldn't have phrased it any better. Hope you enjoy! :D

I picked up where I left off (Rio), and it's at least playable now, so that was good. The speed and framerate are much improved, but the core gameplay is the same, which is the problem for me because I'm just not enjoying it.

I'm not sure you're fully understanding what I'm suggesting, and because I love 90 percent of what you've done here and you've given me a free game, I'll do my best to explain better.

You've built a beautiful world with lots of stuff for me to break and awesome music, but the game you've chosen to put in that world doesn't allow me to enjoy breaking stuff. You've basically built an amazing playground that I don't get to play in because I'm running through it so fast, and you've given me a powerful character that never feels powerful.

You've put an "endless runner" style game in a world that's too complex for an endless runner, because the best endless runners are simple. I'm a huge fan of endless runners by the way...see sig below. What I'm recommending is a fundamental change in the focus of the game.

Here's what I would recommend specifically:

    1. Cut the speed in the main game literally in half.
    2. Focus the player on destruction and score rather than surviving.
    3. Implement a star system based on level score...maybe 2 stars to progress to the next level

The result...a game that's more Mario than Sonic (if you follow)...and is much more friendly to the iphone crowd...and takes advantage of the sweet destruction stuff you've done here.

Obviously, not everyone will agree with me that this isn't a good runner, and luckily, you have an endless runner mode already in the game for those folks...and I'd leave that alone.

I'm not trying to be negative here. I just really love what you've done here and wish I was having more fun with it.

Edit to add...I'm ironically enjoying the endless runner mode, as it seems to ramp up the speed at a much more deliberate pace and lets me focus on breaking stuff, which is what I really want from this game.

no, I TOTALLY agree with this!

Really, I feel like I'm missing out on half the fun because half the level is just passed by because of the quickness of it all.

I don't know if you guys would even consider changing the game this much... but maybe it's something to look into in the future? Maybe have a Demolition Dash 0.2 or something that's more like chess's idea. I'd buy it again for that... maybe even pay $1.99 or $2.99 =oD

    Hey chess,

    Sorry - I don't quite follow.
The version 2.0 is all about the new Endless Run mode. Picking up where you left off in the World Rampage mode to get an impression of the changes is rather futile, because there we haven't changed a lot with this update. The World Rampage levels still benefit quite a bit from the improved camera as well as from several other improvements, but that's about it.

It's not that I'm oblivious to your suggestions regarding the World Rampage mode, quite the opposite. I'm totally following your vision of "a game that's more Mario than Sonic".
It's just that such major changes to this game mode were never meant to be part of the v2.0 update, but we'll have to consider them in the future. After all, neither Rome nor Super Mario have been built in a day.

However, in the new Endless Run mode, we have tried (and imho succeeded) to already implement much of what you're suggesting:
    • We have both "literally cut the speed in half" and "focussed the player on destruction and score rather than surviving".
    • While we have not "implemented a star system based on level score", we have instead tried to come up with a really interesting multiplier system that will reward perfection as much as perserverance during your hunt for the highscore.
I can understand very well that you'd much prefer to see these changes also in the levels of the World Rampage mode, but please keep in mind that we do not consider one game mode lesser than the other.
For us, there is no "main" game mode and "secondary" game mode - only by the sum of all its parts Demolition Dash is the full experience that we've always wanted to provide.
And you, the players, now get to do the cherry picking - you can choose whether you want to relax in a round of Practice Mode, or get back to improving those Rio highscores in World Rampage mode, or anything in between.

After all, the new Endless Run mode is much (read: A LOT) more than just a quick rehash of the World Rampage levels. We have implemented a dynamic system that creates the run randomly out of more than 300 level fragments, making each run different from the last.
And with the new in-game statistics, no run will ever be in vain, but at least help you to progress in the game.

With that in mind, I urge you to try the new Endless Run mode - I am really curious if you'd agree that these changes go into the right direction, and actually cover most, if not all of our suggestions.
Maybe, hopefully, you'll find there what you're missing in the World Rampage levels today, and never even want to go back. That is, until our next Demolition Dash release.

    best
    /chris

Absolutely. I edited the end of my last post to mention that endless runner mode is much more enjoyable and the reasons why.

I trust that the game is in good hands...just didn't want your hard work to go to waste as it zipped by. ;)

Will keep an eye out for future updates!
