    Graphics

So this is how gameloft evolved past 3 years! They really did a great job!

    asphalt 4:
wow we see here on screen controls, 3d.
    asphalt 5:
Hugely improved performance, graphics, shadows, lightning and AA.
    asphalt 6:
Improved sound, polygon size, lightning, speed feel, textures
    fast five:

World is really improved in fast five. You can see how well done textures looks and you can see that real time shadows and lightning. Plus design looks better then asphalt 6 so I think this game is currently the best from gameloft.

Well it's based off a movie.. But it actually has nice graphics and appears to have OK gameplay!

I love racing games, but for now I wish they focused more on Order & Chaos...

Lol at the fake shadowing. Cmon Gameloft, if you're gonna fake it, at least don't make it obvious.

Graphics honestly look too cartoonish, while Real Racing 2 has a more realistic feel. And this definitely isn't Unreal Engine.

I don't think Gameloft knows how to code dynamic lighting... maybe you can help?

Of course they know how to code it...their engine is just too inefficient to properly utilize it without raping your frame rate. Firemint did it. The problem with dynamic lighting is that unless you're using a deferred renderer, it eats up frame rate, and on 3rd/4th gendevices that only have 2 shader cores, that's a big problem. The iPad 2 is better off since it has 16 shader cores, but that's a small market.

That's why Real Racing 2, which is IMO one of the most beautiful portable games to date, still skimps on things like tree models and wall textures. All the resources are going to the shadow of the car and the real-time reflections and light on the car from the sun.

Heck even Infinity Blade has very little dynamic lighting. Besides a light reflective ground, the shadows in that game are baked in instead of real time.

The only other game I've seen with proper shadowing on iOS is Forgotten Memories.

Car reflections are already in Asphalt 6. (And no, you don't need an iPad 2 for them)

Well, Real Racing 2 could also have fake shadowing. The reason why you can't see it, is because the tracks there don't have any jumps and are verry flat.

Also, please stop complaining about games not using Unreal, as long as it looks good it really doesen't matter. Atleast this has fake shadowing, none of the currently available games on the AppStore using unreal actually have any player shaddows.

I'm not complaining about it not using Unreal...the only device that can even properly use Unreal flawlessly is the iPad 2.

Also I'm pretty sure Real Racing 2 doesn't fake it. Not only did Firemint representatives say so, but when I was browsing through the game files there were shader cache files (.glsl) named or referring to RealTime Shadows. I'm pretty sure the track shaodws are faked in that game so it must be the car.

Why did I have to pay $5 for asphalt 6? I don't like that game at all but this I do like. If only GT racing motor academy had these graphics it would be perfect.

and actually it's even more beautiful on iPad 2, as the iPad 2 version is the only one to display motion blur...

To me its all about gameplay. Obviously i want nice graphics but i've seen a fair few games which have great graphics (Eg Race after 1977) but the gameplay is poor.

Theres a reason a fair few of us play retro titles, graphics/sound might be dated but the gameplay is brilliant.

I think you may have not completeley read what I said or not understood the context, what I said was that as long as the graphics are good it doesen't matter wich engine they use for the graphics.

I find the asphalt series graphics way to cartoony. Thats the main reason why I liked the need for speed series better. Asphalt feels to much like a headlong rush to the finish where sometimes I have no clue whats going on around me. Need for speed gives something in between a sim and arcade racer, but i prefer it to the chaos that is asphalt. On that note, I really hope gameloft will go for a slightly less hectic arcade experience. Not sure they have the sim thing down though. GT racing is virtually unplayed for me when I have real racing. Felt like the car tweaking was overkill in GT.

So hopefully it will come out tonight in the UK.
And if it doesn't then no problem, we will still have Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery.
