My cousin made hunting these secret or legendary monsters his mission. In FFVI he hunted and killed both of the super hard monsters that were more powerful than the last boss of the game way before reaching the end
Are you people serious or just stupid? There's nothing wrong with boycotting companies that so blatantly and deliberately screw their customers over. We're not talking about making bad games here, we're talking about making exploitative ones. Add to that the fact that SE doesnt support their high priced ports and people still report lots of crashing... YOU are what's wrong with gaming today, sir. If you continue to support companies with such crappy practices, they'll continue to make crappy, exploitative games. I wasn't even getting on your case saying YOU should boycott them, just saying I was and my reason. But let's be real... The reason why IAPs are the way they are and SE continues to be a horrible company is because people support those products. YOU determine their product, and I dunno why youre confused as to why I wouldn't want to rebuy a game I played over 20 years ago, but this time with lots of crashes!
The only crappy exploitative game I can recall them coming out with is the recent All The Bravest one? It's true that they don't always do a good job of updating their apps, but recent ports like FF4 and TWEWY have been excellent. More expensive compared to other apps? Well...yes. But more fun compared to other apps? Again...yes.
You're right, there's nothing wrong with taking a stance and boycotting a company for whatever reason even if others don't see the logic in it. But you gotta take some of the blame that you were a bit of a moron to not do any research at all and just blindly buy a game that is known for it's gambling IAP crap for unlocking other characters and more than that has pretty poor gameplay. Even the reviews on the appstore are pretty negative about the IAP and weak gameplay... at least read the reviews on the appstore. I mean, it's like going to a restaurant you've loved eating at before and picking something new on the menu because the name sounds interesting and not asking anything about it and get upset it has peanuts when you are allergic to them. I'm doing my own boycott... I don't buy IAP. Simple, no questions... I don't buy IAP. I haven't yet, and I never plan to. That means for me even games that you can only unlock the full game or some expansion through IAP will not be played by me unless the free/regular content is decent. It's my personal choice to do this... I'm not bothered that others choose to indulge in IAP. It's a choice. Frankly I understand the Dev's perspective as far as games getting ripped off (especially on Android) and feeling like they have to lock the real game behind an IAP purchase. But I've read that there have been exploits for IAP stuff before... so a determined game thief is going to play whatever they want to. SquareEnix makes some great games on IOS. They have some that are pretty exploitative in the IAP department... but it's easy to see those because of the IAP in the first place. So I don't buy them. I won't play the rest of FF Dimensions because it can only be unlocked through IAP. Same for Ghost Trick from Capcom and tons of other games. But I have over 1800 apps on iOS so it's not like I'm hurting for games to play.
That is actually an idea I haven't tried yet. Downloading a freemium game and playing until the first paywall...
1. Theatrhythm isn't exploitative. 2. No idea about Guardian Cross. Sorry. 3. Many companies offered separate HD/iPhone releases back in the day. Now they don't and neither do SE. I feel you're clutching at straws here. They've made a couple of asshole decisions yes, but overall I'm very happy with SE's offerings on the App store.
This would apply to most people, but not myself. I'm new to ios gaming, and it was just my habit to toss a buck or four at games that sounded interesting and got good reviews. I read reviews in the app shop, but tend to be more trusting to devs I know and like. Bored one night, I caught ATB when it FIRST came out. It had a slam or two, but that's it. I figured no biggie, and spent the four bucks. I don't care about the four bucks. I don't mind trying new restaurants. In this case, I invested 4 bucks and learned a cheap lesson from a company I'd consider gambling 60 bucks on for a triple-a title. So I'm not complaining about a nut allergy or such nonsense, I'm saying EVERYTHING about the experience was subpar and told me volumes about the company, so I'm not going to give them any more money. I don't think you can be a good gaming company and be run with dollar signs in mind. You either make games people want to play or you make games with money meaning more than gameplay. Blizzard recently screwed the pooch with this one as well, and I'm far more leery to support them when normally everything they do I happily toss 60 bucks at them for. Now I doubt I will ever again, unless they change their business models again. So yea it's my fault for spending four bucks on a gamble of a new game. My mistake, and one I won't repeat again. Oh, and for the record, I never did micro transactions either until just the other day... Heroes & Castles is bloody amazing for 2 bucks, and I didn't mind tossing them 2 more. Why? Because everything is available in game and iap is truly and totally optional, so why not save a little time buying a perk and supporting my favorite iOS game to date? I like their approach to business and active support of their title, so I'll break my own rule and do an iap for the first time ever.
Tl;dr - SE shouldn't be trusted even if you didn't buy ATB. It's mere existence makes them despicable on a new level for such a large company. Any company that's willing to trade in consumer goodwill for a few bucks is a company that doesn't care about your gaming experience. Period.
Sorry for diverting this OT a bit... though still on the subject of SE... definitely anyone that loves classic turnbased RPG's... these are two games worth throwing a few bucks at. THQ decided to drop making smaller games and just go full throttle for making big console titles. They made some great games but didn't make enough money to cover the costs. A pretty gamer focused plan and they just went under. This isn't even a unique story. Fact is, it's very hard to be a gaming company without keeping the dollar signs in mind. The only way that seems to work is when people live at their parents and develop some great game or just code a bunch in their spare time outside of their day job. That's how many of the bigger independents have made it. Still, so many just can't manage to get the financial side of things to work out no matter how great the game. I talk to (thanks to the forums and stuff) quite a few developers these days, and it's always painful to hear how unprofitable some great games have been. Final Freeway 2R for instance. I love that game. The dev still hasn't made enough to cover the costs of it.
Ha, that's what I was about to post. ... Back to the games... FF1 on NES was my first experience with the series. But I really loved Dragon Warrior (NES DQ1) more so. To this day I still love the DQ series but I stopped with FF sometime near the middle of FF7. One day I hope SE realizes that they've tapped out the DS market and they start porting the DQ games over to iOS. Those are games I'd pay the premium price on.
An interesting thread. I have purchased a number of iterations of the FF games on a number of platforms beginning with SNES (I couldn't afford an NES at the time). On the iOS, they are dated, and have issues, but fun to replay IMO. FF IV seems the best to me, with FF 3 right behind. 1 and 2 are competent. Best, last Square product for me was FF X, and they lost me after that (even though I bought most of the PS, PS3 products). I would love to see FF X on iOS, but not sure thy could do it. @undead - I'm trying to bring it back on topic
I skipped FFXI for obvious reasons but i loved the dungeon-crawl-esque style of FFXII. The characters werent as lovable as the ones from 1 to X, but it was quite a great game for me to play an FF game on a realtime ATB (somehow felt similar to Baldur's Gate), while dungeon crawling, while customizing characters through a huge skill map system. I thought I read somewhere that some of the doods who designed FFXII were guys from the Vagrant Story team, which gave it the dungeon-crawl feel. Vagrant Story is still my most favorite RPG ever, so yeah... Loved FFXII. I didnt have a PS3, so anything on that, i missed.
Sigh - a confession - hope I don't get banned - I never played Vagrant Story Heard great things, and I know it's a standard. Never got it though, so I don't have the comparative view. XII was too linear for me, and 13-2 I put in about 10-12 hours, and just sort of stopped, although there are some intriguing elements, and graphically it was gorgeous.
FFXII was definitely a stepback from Vagrant Story, but of couse we are on the FF1 & 2 sale thread. So if anyone has any interest in classic RPG games that, in a way, started out the digital RPG age, these two available on the iOS are it. Sigh... saying this makes me remember the NES days. I still have the original cartridge of FF1, but i doubt that still works if i can find anyone with a working NES console to see if it does. Im just keeping it for the memories.
Despite reduced difficulty the iOS version is still worth. The iOS Final Fantasy 1 is based on the PSP port which itself traces back to changes from Game Boy Advance Dawn of Souls iteration. Here is a quote from Dawn of Souls wikipedia about difficulty tweaks
