Originally there were many apps that could do this, but Apple decided that it shouldn't be allowed and took them all off the store.

You can only do it via jailbreak, with the app SBSettings.

Yeah, I think Apple missed a few here and there. I got the full version of Free Memory when it went . . . free.

Yeah there's a cool little slide down task bar that let's you free up memory.
Apple should of included something like that originally.

Seriously. And you can launch it from anywhere. Plus you can have the option of having your free ram displayed in the status bar, so you can keep an eye on when it's getting low. JB'ing is the best just for stuff like this.

Of course, instead of having these features be standard Apple could have just put some more frickin ram in these things to begin with.

I just searched it in the AppStore, there's a Lite of it, but it costs a dollar, and all it does is tell you whether or not you need to restart your device :p

I am j/b. I have removed all my custom themes, extentions, utilities except fir sbsettings. Why? Because it allows me to check/free memory. Plus the options to respring/reboot. Too bad apple don't allow it.

Get "System Activity Monitor" apple actually reccomends it. I got it when it came out. it is my most used app next to facebook. Shows you exactly how much memory used before and after.

I haven't had to restart my itouch since I've got it. More than worth the price. I recomend this app for anyone. It also has a lot more content like how much memory you have and how it's being partitioned. Battery status. Running processes. Email device I.d.

Pretty much what windows task manager does plus some extra stuff. I use this app after just about every task I do. My device is not jb'd either.

You can free memory with SBSettings by pressing the processes button.
