Sarcasm on that, "Retarded" is basically just as offensive to anyone who knows or has known a retarded person. I do actually know someone with that condition, and it does annoy me to see it as an insult on the internet.

Do you know what really gets me PO'd is when we are discussing things in History and my teacher opens a mindmap and says, lets brainstorm.

Some idiot always goes "thats offensive" I have never met someone who is actually offended by it, people who suffer from brainstorms wouldn't be able to understand it, and it isn't even an offensive term, just a verb. Also why was no-one offended before 2007?

Nope. Can't see anything wrong with sucking... As I don't see anything wrong with beeing gay. PC just don't work so lighten up. Most ppl who use gay in a negative form don't want to insult you (or your lifestyle) personally. It's okay to remind them that it's not political correct, but it's nothing to be offended by. I'm not gay and I don't say "gay" (or the german equivalent) in a negative way but I wouldn't be offended by anyone using it this way if i were gay.

I never said I was offended by people saying gay (i actually earlier said i use it myself) what I'm saying is he compared being gay to being a sucker, someone who gives lots of blowjobs, therefore not a positive thing.
And don't worry I don't get offended over the internet, unless I've met you personally any criticism of me is considered void

Its some disease people suffer from

Ah okay, didn't know that. It's supposed to be offensive to people suffering from epilepsy... a bit farfetched isn't it?

    This thread is gay. jk

Actually a recent episode of South Park touched on this subject. http://www.afterelton.com/blog/edkennedy/south-park-f-word

They referred to how the meaning of the word "fag" has changed, especially among young people. Not only was the episode hilarious, but I thought they made a really good point.

The word probably started being used that because of negative conations, bla bla bla, and all that, but no one I know actively says, "dude, that's gay" and in their mind goes "ahahahaha, I'm insulting homosexuals by using it in a derogatory fashion, teeheehee!!!" It's just a type of slang that teens use. We're not actively protesting against different sexual preferences, we're just saying that something sucks (and don't reply with the argument, "why don't you just say 'sucks'", that's weak).

Yup that's pretty much the gist imo. I worked with a couple homosexual dudes at a restaurant when I was in college. They were cool about it, they used to joke with us and laugh along (we were a foul-mouthed bunch over there and every customer that gave us a hard time or didn't tip enough was 'gay', at best). I feel like if they had it their way, they would have preferred a different term be used but I don't think it was anything that kept them up at night, because it wasn't being used maliciously or towards them. I'll never forget, my roommate and I had our manager over (who was gay) after work one night for some beers. He was downing those beers quick and he kept calling us 'fags' because we were babysitting our drinks :)

    I agree with these feelings.....

Evenwhen I'm the only black person in a room full of whites friends and someone happens to reference a black person as a nigger I dint get offended cause the person in question usually is a nigger meaning low life scum.

I'm not that so I don't get offended, but it is funny to see their faces turn even more white by embarassment lol.

I think that's a cop out and weak in itself to excuse it because of that. No one has to use that word. The original use of it was to insinuate someone IS gay which is equating gay with bad. It is insulting to some and not to others. Why even use it? No one says "That's straight" or "That's white" Tell that to Matthew Shepherd who was killed by ignorant hicks from Nebraska who excused the same behavior.

There is no excuse, it may seem innocent but inside some people, it's way to be homophobic and joke about it. It's not funny. It's 2009 not 1939. Find a new word

actually my brother says "that's straight" meaning good or we have an accord

and people used to say "that's mighty white of you" all the time white meaning the right thing or honest way.

colors have negative and positive conatations throughout history

I rembrr reading a couple of years ago in one of the Hawaiian newspaper editorials someone writting about the word "Haole"

To paraphrase, it said some like "Haoles should just accept it, even if they don't like being called it, it's not their word anyways"

It was actually much longer of an article. But anyways, it made me think that you could replace Haole with the N word and you basically have the serous arguement.

Now the whole "gay" usage is a little different in that the usage isn't the same. But the association betweenthe words is the problem. Basically, change the word gay for to a word describing some group of people and you have the serous thing. Much as the haole arguement above, it shows what the usage actually equates to in more easy to understand ways.

That movie was so mexican, I hated it.

    or

That's so christian, the Yankees always win withtheir huge payroll.

Granted, it is a little less catchy. And why does Mexican sound like a bad word anyway? What's the deal with that.
