I feel like I'm looking at a genre list from Apple it suggests that there's so many fewer genres than there really are. I'm in the early stages of making a cross between Rayman and Metroid for iOS and I decided that I should look up what I'll be competing with. I went to TA's game list and went to filter by genre and what is this crap? Action Adventure Arcade Board Casino Dice Educational Family Kids Music Puzzle Racing Role Playing Simulation Sports Strategy Trivia Word First off, some of these categories are just dumb. Dice. What the crap is that? WarCraft III and Baulder's Gate utilize a dice system for determining damage - would you put those in there? Probably not, because no one freaking cares about that detail. No, what goes in that category is Yahtzee, which definitely belongs in a Casino category, and other similar games which have nothing to do with skill. Now comes the part that actually makes it sad: Where would you put Doom, Gears of War, Mario 64, and Rayman? Would you honestly try calling all of those games "Action" and completely fail to distinguish amongst them? Doom is a First Person Shooter. Gears of War is a Third Person Shooter. Mario 64 is a 3D Platformer. Rayman is a 2D Platformer. Then there's your Run and Guns Ghosts and Goblins, Kommander Keen, and Super Metroid (although Super Metroid is also an Adventure game heck, it kind of defines its own genre, the Metrovanias.) So, end of my rant what does the iOS app store have right now for good platformers like Rayman and Metroid?
You feel that way because the genre list is direct from Apple, on the App Store itself, which is pulled over to our local iTunes database. Action: https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=7001&mt=8 Adventure: https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=7002&mt=8 ...And so on. It's not ideal, but, it's what we've got to work with. If you scroll down to the "Categories" listing in the right column about half way down the front page you'll find some additional genre granularity from specific categories I've assigned reviews, but even that's not perfect.
