when ever an app is being updated the developer always says its a free update so i was wondering if an update has ever cost, and if so what was the app ??:)

No, I don't think developers can charge for updates. Which is probably a good thing.

They can, they just tend to not do it for games and such, some utility apps have updates that cost money. Cant remember atm but I remember some I saw last year.

I know they can, but in my year of owning an iPod Touch with over 400 applications, I've never had an update that cost money.

I was wondering this too for a while now. That explains the constant free button a lot, but it still seems a bit pointless. I guess they couldn't really put in anything else instead.

I think once you get to the point where an update seems like it does enough things differently that you would want to charge money for it, you are possibly better off just releasing it as a sequel.

One of these days a dev of a popular game is gonna pull a fast one and charge for an update. I bet about 90% of users (me included) would hit download without noticing a price, just assuming it is free like the rest

No apple doesn't allow it. The creator of tweetie did an presentation about his app to Stanford years ago and he wanted to charge 99 cents for an update instead of 2.99 for the app again and pissing the existing customers off (oh the irony). Instead, the developers can now remove an older version of their app from the app store and charge for the new updated version.

I'm no developer, but I'm pretty sure they are unable to charge for an update, but they are able to sell DLC, which would be along the same lines.

well...still it makes the customer pay. But, as far as I know, this used to happen more. but, with the age of DLC, devs didnt want to make customers mad, so the just offered more with an optional price.

  16. I am 100% sure the could since beginning of the app store, because there has always been the "download all free updates" button.

No, but some updates can contain DLC, and they cost money.

In my experience with the app store, they have never charged for updates. They have made sequels, but never charged for the updates. BUT, they have charged for expansions like in nazi zombies, for example and they were supposed to have level packs in star defense.
