Just picked this up because it looks cool and I admire a single developer producing something like this. Working through the tutorials now. One comment though - can the game please not play sound when I have the mute switch on? Cheers Jamie
I have a few questions for the developer: 1.Will there be an update in the future which allows us to play with all the characters? 2.Some info inserted in the app, like on the site, which offers information about the characters? Otherwise, great game
I almost picked this up .... looks quite good. The only thing that made me pause was the seeming lack of single player content. It seems what is there may be rather thin.(?) MP is totally secondary for me; but it seems that for this game it takes center stage, yes? Really like the 'Yes, God?' character animations when selected...nice touch.
The old school PnP gamer in me can't resist this, but I just wish the was more of a single player component to it. The multiplayer looks great but I honestly don't foresee a lot of my time spent with it as this seems the type of game to play with friends rather than randoms. Otherwise I have to admit, having spent quit a bit this week already on apps and this one coming relatively out of the blue, I will take the plunge. I hope Ron (that was his name, right? The developer?) considers more of a "session" style of missions to an overall "campaign" just to flesh out the single portion a bit more. Then again I guess that is the point of the custom game option. In any case this is a nice surprise for my new iPad 3, and looks to be one that I will put through the paces attempting to recapture those earlier years when I could still tabletop game!
What a shame, was looking forward to this. But an IOS TBS game without async multiplayer? Insta-pass. Not sure I understand the logic behind this design choice, but $3 for a game lacking what Hero Academy has and Outwitters will have just doesn't make sense for a player that loves multiplayer strategy games on the IOS.
Totally disagree! I'm bored of all those latest async games were you haye to wait for hours/days to confirm an opponents step or move Even if you don't have the time to play a 30 min session in one block keep in mind that others don't want to play 1 game over 1 week. Therefore: Instabuy for me because of NO-async but real time multiplayer like in this or Ascension/Nightfall with short timer. Awesome game btw!!!
Played some more and absolutely LOVE this game. It's superb. Asynch multi player? I really couldn't care less. This is a fun single player game and for me (and many others) that's all that matters. GREAT work! Jamie.
Thanks for showing up here! This is by far the Mecca of ios game discussion...glancing at your game for 2 min I SMASHED the buy button....hearing that it was a 6 year alone process even confirmed my 3 bucks to your profit....nice work... so does the game have a driven storyline campaign because the way ppl are describing it, it seems not...but the screenshots say different. I also like asynch gameplay because it brings out the essence of mobile/phone gameplay ...simply stated....its our phone or tablet...not a couch platform...BUT the game looks so good to me I was willing to forget it and play soley on 1 player campaign and occasional multiplayer battles on wifi.....in any case please keep us informed of your updates and thanks for visiting us so fast!
You do realize that you can have both in the same game, right? Most async implementations do not prevent you and yer pals from playing the game as a realtime title. You seem to believe they are mutually exclusive. In the vast majority of async titles, the game functions as a realtime multiplayer title until someone leaves the game. Carcassonne even has the option of forced realtime games, to PREVENT players from taking their sweet time with their turns. If Hero Mages had included async with this option, *everyone* would have been satisfied. With async (which functions as realtime as long as you stay in the game), the game can appeal to both players who cannot find time for 30 minutes in one go, and people that don't want to wait for turns. Thus, the developer can sell more copies, and thus has much greater possibilities support his or her game, as well as making new ones. Async even benefits fellas like you, who want to play in one go, as it also acts as an excellent protection against games forfeited due to connection drops, phone calls, etc. Again, one does not exclude the other. All that you mention can be still be had, even if the option to play asynchronically exists. In the vast majority of async titles, the game functions as a realtime multiplayer title until someone leaves the game. Outside of development time and lack of funds, there is NEVER any reason not to include async in a turn-based multiplayer game. The entertainment value that stems from sitting down with friends, merriment and laughter in abundance and much rejoicing, is kind of a moot point when what you sit down with is actually your device. It might just be the strangest reason not to include async I've come across yet A shame. The game's multiplayer aspect sounds charming, but I, just like many others, simply do not have the time to sit down, even for 15 minute sessions. Had I been interested in single player, this would indeed have been a selling point All that said, even though I will pass this one by, you seem to have made a truly charming and fun title. Congratulations on that, and welcome to TA!
So how good is this from a single player point of view? Is the quick battle mode good enough to hold your attention. I'm just wondering as I'm a sucker for TBS games but I've only got a couple of pound left of iTunes credit. Anyone want to post a gameplay video showing the actual fighting/dice battle mechanics. (I have a feeling I'll be picking this up real soon anyway, I'm no good at resisting temptation)
I can see this game being a little addictive, I'll say that. But, can I ask honestly how are the dice rolls generated?? Is it random?? Can we be assured its entirely Random?? Because I just scraped through a game where it came down to me have to guys (Mage and warrior) vs only 1 AI (paladin), and obviously with me having my Mage I was at a mad advantage. I was able to use whatever Mage cards I could get my hands on. I even buffed my Mage to role 7 dice in one roll. And guess what...predictably none landed. For turn after turn, predictably nothing was landing, while the paladin is slowly wearing my Mage down. My Mage died and I ended up with just warrior vs paladin and me now ony having slight life advantage. Once again miss miss miss miss hit yay!! ie it just seemed to much like the rolls were keeping the AI's paly in the game...just saying. I just want to be assured its random because idevice nearly flew across the room lol (if u can't tell I'm not a big fan of the dice....I like to calculate my attacks).
I have always been waiting for such a great game! The diversity of the tactical possibilities seems to be endless. My only complaint is the arbitrary name of the game which is randomly exchangeable...
Okay, two questions for Ross: 1. In the video tutorial of the gameplay you show that there is an option to play custom games with custom maps but there is no option for that available in the actual game in the custom game menu. Is this option missing on purpose or is this going to be added later in a future update? For me the enjoyment of playing this game hinges on the ability to make random maps so that I can keep it fresh... 2. Part question part request: Is there plans for pass and play feature to be implemented in the app? This seems like a missed opportunity especially with a mobile platform such as ours. Some of my old gaming friends and I used to tabletop game with still live close by and I see them quite often. We don't get to play tabletop role-playing games anymore (kids, wives, jobs and the stigma of being near 40 year old men who still want to PnP roleplay) but this seems like a perfect opportunity to sit around, chat, and pass and play to re-create that kind of feeling! Synchronous, asynchronous gameplay, it's all nice and great but good option to also supplement would be passing play which seems the easiest to implement. I half expected the option to be present when I went to custom game and had the option to change the opponents as open, but alas, not to open then to pass and play. With all that said you have created a great game that I still am enjoying I just feel that there're certain features that seem to be missing or that would benefit the app that are aren't present in the game! Regardless, you have done an exceptional job as a one-man indie developer!
I bought this game but after reading the website I'm still not sure how the expansion armies are going to be available in iOS.
1) There is a 6-mission story-driven tutorial campaign. This campaign teaches you the mechanics of game play, but does not currently extend further than this. 2. Yes! You can play MP co-op against the AI. You can also play SP with AI teammates vs. other AI's.
Players who have previously purchased expansion content via the browser-based version can use this content on their iOS device already. The content is tied to your account, so just log-in to the game, and all of your bonus characters will be there waiting for you. They will also work in SP. I am adding In-App purchases to iOS in v1.8 (next major release). With v1.8, you'll also have the ability to buy more game content using "player-rewards", that's earned by playing multiplayer games, referring friends, posting in forum, etc. etc.
1) Custom maps are currently supported on MP-only as they are stored on the online database. iOS version does not yet include ability to edit online maps (unless you've previously purchased map editor saves via the browser version). I will definitely be adding these features in next major release. 2) Great idea! Yes, I will work to add this in next version as well. Thanks for feedback!
