All I can say is "Wow!" Whoever picked this year's GOTY is really out of touch with the average gamer. With all the amazing games that were released this year, it's a shame that the TouchArcade staff couldn't get off their high horses long enough to spend some time playing them. Here are just a few of the reasons this year's so-called winner is really a loser: 1. It's not backwards compatible with OS 1.x. All of us with first gen Touches are left out...once again. 2. It doesn't have that newfangled "retinoid" capability thing that everyone's always talking about. 'Nuff said! 3. No tap-to-shoot option. Who doesn't like their FPS to feel like a high-tech version of whack-a-mole?? 4. Not a single Zombie in the entire game. What's up with that? I hope that next year all the aspiring bloggers and wannabe-nephrologists at Touch Arcade can put a little more time and effort into choosing an appropriate GOTY...
Any of those options would be better than making the choice that they did. I'm boycotting the game simply on principle. I'm also boycotting the site and the forums, which is why I'm not posting this.
Someone needs to ban polls for a good week, my god. Everytime I come to TA now I feel like I'm taking a test I didn't study for . . .
Seriously. Worst game ever. Everyone here is incompetent. I'm gonna go use a site where people actually know what they're talking about. Goodbye, TA, and hello IGN!
Worst game ever? Really? Btw: IGN did a nice preview of Aralon. http://wireless.ign.com/articles/114/1140427p1.html
IGN's iPhone area is sort of 'hidden' - I think it would do them a bit of good to make it more known that they actually do have a section for iPhone games. If you go to their front page, one wouldn't know exactly how to get there, easily. There's no direct link at the top. To me it almost feels like in that respect they don't take the iPhone gaming as seriously as the other platforms. That needs to change. Clearly the iPhone/iPad has been established as an IMPORTANT gaming platform. Would EA, Activision, Epic, and Square Enix be here if it wasn't?
To me one of the biggest problems is that they lump Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7 all into the same section. As an iPhone owner, I don't want to have to sift through articles that have nothing to do with my device just to read about the ones that are, and I'm sure that Android users are sick of doing the same with regards to having to put up with iOS articles. They're great with reviewing games from the big names you mentioned along with Gameloft and maybe some games published by Chillingo, but beyond that they don't really review a lot of indie games or games made by some smaller dev studios. Your game, which obviously is the most ambitious open world RPG to ever be created on the platform, got little more than a "preview" that was published a day or two after the release. It didn't get any mention before launch; not even in their "Appalanche" article that highlighted how many highly anticipated games were being released on the 16th. Until we start to see IGN publishing unbiased reviews of games made by more than just devs like EA and Gameloft then I will not take their "Mobile" section seriously.
They completely forgot these games because they came out earlier in the year/ weren't advertised much: Space Miner- One of the best reviewed games (by TouchArcade) of the whole year, this humorous, original space explorer was filled with fun, great graphics/sound and an excellent RPG system. Kometen- Ignored because it was a low-down indy game, this piece of emotional art mixes hard themes such as learning about life, death, loneliness, happiness, and friendship, in the form of a 2d planet roamer. Perfect Cell- This one actually came out too late to be mentioned, I think. The creators of Edge, Mobigame, made this graphically superb action/puzzle/stealth game. Playing an evil lifeform breaking out of a scientist's laboratory was great fun, mutilating guards and sneaking pass lasers to escape. A really cool experience! Grand Theft Auto- The most immersive, deep action game on iDevices, even beating out Aralon and the Gamelofts in my opinion. However, it's a port, not an original.
Here's an idea.. We take all the game of the months and choose a game of the year! This way we make sure that a game from january is included in the selection!! Ga I'm such a genious
Josh is clearly bemused- as you would be. I'm sure he understands it's nothing personal. Oh and please DON'T make Crex a mod
lol, tell me you didnt think this thread was for Aralon did you? Aralon was the 'unofficial' TA GOTY. And thats fine with me. But its the official TA GOTY which has me completely clueless. It didnt deserve to be GOTY. Its doesnt even deserve to be game of the day even if the only other game release on that day was Whack-A-Clone!!! I have no idea what Eli and company were smoking when they chose (errmm.. will choose) the GOTY.
Hi, this. is. bloody. friggin'. RIDICULOUS!!!! MAN, MAN, MAN!!! Are they stupid or what? How can they even DARE to make THIS piece of sh!t GOTY?!?!? Do they even PLAY the games? Can't be. Impossible. No friggin' way. It clearly has to be the other game! Not this one - it is overhyped, overpriced, overthis and overthat. TA staff must have eaten too much CJD contaminated beef. Go on like this and I'll change to STP forums!!!111!1 - even today, Eli doesn't seem to know that TA's forum members are calling the shots!! Vovin
Whoever decided what the GOTY is should get kicked off a really high building, land on the tip of a church tower, slowwwwwly slide down leaving loads of blood marks, then fall into the bell towers and accidentally ring all the bells bashing and smashing his head against each one of them while falling down the towwer and then land as a bloody mess in the middle of the christmas service. Now that would be a great beginning for a cheap Zombie story!
