Ok - I will break with all the frivolity going on here. How it fits in your life? I have no idea. It is "needed"? For me, definitely not. I like reading in bed - iPhone - too small, don't have a kindle, laptop too bulky - iPad - just right... Surfing internet lying down - much easier with iPad than iPhone - head to head with lap top, in a recliner iPad is much easier... Gaming is great with gorgeous screens. Watching streaming HD TV is a great experience, as well as movies that I have recorded. So, advantages over the lap top / desktop for me are just ease of using it throughout my house, where ever I happen to want to be... I primarily use mine strictly for entertainment at this time, potentially could be very helpful for me at work, showing people diagrams, pictures, etc as it is much easier viewing than a laptop. Not the computing power, and obviously suffers hugely from I/O but should work out well. Hope this helped. now, frivolity among the masses may resume...
Lol this thread was highly amusing...meh I was too lazy to read all that you wrote. Keep it small next time thnx
Thank you for the info. Do you leave the house with it? If so, where would you take it with you and what would you carry it in? You have already mentioned work as a presentation tool.
Well the ipad seems pretty useless. If I wanted hand held gaming , I'd go with my DS where all the big name corps are making games (Pokemon). If i wanted gaming at home , most likely going to be ps3 or wii. Laptop for msn and maybe some Maplestory. PC for some gaming. As for books , I like to read actual books , maybe I just like the feel of paper? Itouch is pretty much only for music and a bit of msn. So if I ever get a ipad , It's probably going to be a expensive paperweight.
This isn't really what I asked. I really love iPhone as a gaming handheld, so that isn't really in question.
I like the original question. "Where does it fit into my life?" Seems to me that is something only you can answer. For many people, they see it as something they don't need or want. They have an IPhone or IPod or PSP or DS or whatever and they have a computer and they have a laptop. Many are just not sure where this fits. Personally I believe I will get a lot of use out of it. I like one of the previous posters will use it to read and surf and play games. I will also use it as a scorebook at my kids baseball games. There is a great app called GameChanger that will work with the 3g version I'm waiting for that will allow you to upload the games play by play and stats to a website and have it live updated every 60 seconds like espn. Cool for those parents who can't make it to their kids game. They can just go to the website and see how things are going on the fly. I don't know, if you or anyone cannot honestly find a reason to buy the thing, then you shouldn't. Maybe just kick back and wait for the newness to wear off and look for some honest reviews. Or maybe get a hold of your buddy's IPad (I did today) and check it out first hand. I will tell you, it's very much an overgrown IPod Touch. Only faster. I love my Ipod Touch. So I guess I will love this more!
the iPad is completely pointless. It does not have the transportability of an iPhone or the functionality of a laptop; it is a mediocre attempt to put both in one device, and in the process, you lose the advantages of both. The only way this device stands out is by its video playing; it makes a good portable movie player, with an excellent screen and excellent sound. Other than that, there is no reason to buy an iPad
the ipad is not pointless. i have a need for one for my music ( will wait for gen 2 tho, and maybe price drop..).. will fit on my music stand perfect. its all good. ( im sure others will find a use for it, or they will not want one. but to say its pointless is silly, and quite ignorant.. unless you walking in there shoes.. then how would you know its pointless.. ) if you want one get one.. if you do not.. let others have fun with there new toy.. so much negativity.. peace, chris.
Well, I was looking for ideas, but not necessarily expecting anyone to answer that above question specifically. The question was "Where do you guys fit it into your life?". I was curious to see how people that enjoyed the device were using it. Especially if they already had an iTouch/iPhone. When I got my iPhone, it was one of the most amazing devices I have ever owned. It replaced my cell phone, zune, psp/ds and eee pc in one fell swoop and it fit well in just my pocket. There are a great many things I do with the device that I wouldn't have guessed before buying it. I mean, I knew it would be cool, but it completely transitioned how I game and how I communicate. So, I am curious to see what sort of usage it is getting from those people that enjoy it. It just seems like the iPad would make it so that I would have to carry a bag wherever I go, which would pretty much limit its use to home use, work and college. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as that is where I spend the bulk of my time, and I would always have my iPhone at any other time. However, I am still looking for ideas from people that like the iPad to see what it is about the iPad that would make it a more pleasing choice then a laptop or netbook. I think it is fair to say that the gaming is good on it, and it is a capable e-book reader, so it has that going for it. However, I read e-books and comics on my iPhone all of the time with no detriment. I do think it would be great for reading comics, and of course would be generally more comfortable to use than a laptop for most media consumption. I see a lot of overlap in capabilities and that is why I really wanted more information. It does seem like there is an undue amount of negativity. People are just primed to jump down throats and up asses at the drop of a hat.
I have not yet. If I do start using it at work, I would get a nice case for it, just like my case (Samsonite) for my laptop.
I have noticed a pattern. Everyone getting a ipad is older and done school. Most idevice gamers are done school too. I guess most people my age play less idevice games because we play a variety of online games together. From maplestory wow mw2 to borderlands. Even if I wanted one my mom probably won't let me because just like me she thinks that it's useless.
I'm 30 now, and yeah, though I am still in school finishing up my undergrad in EE, I don't really like multiplayer games over the net anymore. I prefer just to have people over for a lan party (left 4 dead 2), 4 player split screen (like Halo3) or 2 player co-op (like in Borderlands). I just don't think it is fun to school (or get beaten by) people I don't know and cannot see. I played WoW for a few years, but I have never really gotten anything out of competitive online gaming. It has been that way as long as I can remember.
I guess I'll give a real reply now. For some reason the OP didn't seem serious earlier. Personally I'll give an opposing view. I think the iPad is a neat device and has some good potential, but it's not something I think is worth the money at this point. It really doesn't do anything that can't be done with a combination of a laptop and iPhone/iPod Touch. Sure it might be easier to use or more convientent, but I guess taht just isn't enough pull for me. If I'm on the go, I take my iPhone. If I want something a little bigger with more capabilities I just bring one of my laptops. With that said, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have good uses for an iPad, but things like watching movies/surfing the web/reading books I already have other devices taht I feel do the same thing just as well. Regarding gaming, it's similar to the iPhone for me. I wouldn't have bought an iPhone or iPod Touch just for gaming. I got an iPhone because I wanted a smartphone and it is one of the best and most supported phones on the market. Only later did I find it had some descent games. I find iPad gaming similar. Sure there are some cool games for the iPad, but is it worth dropping $500 to play App Store quality games on it? Not for me. Then again, I can't really stand most casual games, so that might be half the problem. Either way, I think buying an iPad for gaming is a bad bad decision. There are MUCH better options for spending $500 on gaming rather than getting an iPad.
To me, the iPad is a portable device, and the iPhone is a mobile device. I always have my iPhone with me, and I sometimes have my iPad with me. I almost always have a bag with me (I suggest a classy racing inspired Dunlop bag like http://modculture.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/dunlop.jpg), so I don't mind carrying the iPad with me. I much rather carry the iPad with me than my MacBook Pro, unless I plan on working. The iPad is a great companion at home, especially in the living room and in bed. It will not replace your girlfriend however, but it will keep you warm and fuzzy inside. It's perfect to have on the coffee table, I always want to look up stuff when I'm watching TV or movies (where do I recognize her? what the hell does that word mean? etc). A laptop is too much in the way. Some games are perfect for the iPad, some are perfect for the iPhone: Strategy games (Civ): iPad Dual stick shooters (Minigore): iPhone Line drawing games (Flight Control): both iPad and iPhone, but better on iPad etc Some games aren't even possible on a laptop. Any multi-touch game or accelerometer controlled game in fact. Two examples: Touchgrind, Labyrinth 2, both best on iPad. Using tailor made apps of websites in the iPad is a blast. IMDB just looks so much better than its website and is faster to use. And for older people, like my parents, it's perfect for everything they need. In short, a laptop is perfect for creating content. An iPad is perfect for consuming content.
