I am looking for answers and forum/blog posts going into detail of how Apple runs "minor" app store featuring. Any links would be very much appreciated! There's the major featuring that is run by their teams, but I suspect there's also some sort of automated system giving exposure to some percentage of apps. This proved to be bit difficult topic to research as the relevant terms are pretty generic :-/ I am asking because I am just about to release my game worldwide tomorrow (Dec 20th) and it's now been featured in number of countries (according to App Annie), but with low "Featured Visibility" score (i.e. in some collection and in the tail end of the list). I am assuming this to be mostly automated process (machine learning?), but it would be nice to understand better what's going on. (I have been releasing the game in about 10 countries per day since the last update a week ago, leaving the most important countries for tomorrow. Previously the game was availabe only in couple of soft launch countries.) Can I do something right now to increase the game's visibility in these features? I am assuming Apple has some sort of automated system for updating the sorting order of the apps in the feature lists based on performance (sales? play time? retention?) or some test protocol (if machine learning), but not sure if I can do anything to affect the process. E.g. running ads would give direct traffic, but I am not sure if that would impact the featuring which is about discovery by browsing the app store.
I have heard that it has to do with number of downloads and the amount of "positive" reviews the app is getting. Not sure if that is true, it's just what I heard.
Yeah, the algorithm can’t be too simple or otherwise people would have figured it out (or maybe some have...). Last summer my game was briefly 20th on the free board games chart in Finland. The funny thing is that it had a minor virality episode in Philippines (120th on free board games) at the time and just couple of downloads in Finland. There was no featuring, no ads, nothing on the net... I still don’t know what happened.
