Insatiable consumers of Internet content, rejoicedeveloper Marco Arment has released the biggest update ever for Instapaper, his Web service and iOS app for saving content to read later, right in time for the iPad 2s release. The biggest addition to Instapaper 3.0 is a new social layer, but dont worryyou wont have to start tweeting and posting and liking if you dont want to. But if you are the type to share your favorite articles, both Instapapers site and apps now offer full-featured integration for Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinboard, and Evernote. If youre offline, you can create your posts for those networks and Instapaper will queue them to send when you regain a connection. Now that its easier to share articles you like from Instapaper, its also become easier to find more articles to read from people you know. A new follower system lets you add friends from networks like Facebook and Twitter and follow the articles they mark as liked. This means the star system has been replaced by a more broadly adopted like button. In addition to sharing liked articles with your Instapaper friends, you can also tell Instapaper to auto-post your liked articles to any combination of your social profilesbut again, only if you want to. Arment didnt just get touchy feely for this update. The Instapaper apps are now much faster when downloading and opening articles, and they support downloading higher-resolution images. They also now allow for searching the contents of all downloaded articles, and Arment is looking into enabling the ability to search inside your articles archived online as well. Instapapers Share panel now lets you create a task in Things, and there are plenty of other useful tweaks and additions for everyone. Instapaper 3.0 is available now as a universal app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for $5. Its a free update to existing owners, and youll need to be running iOS 3.1 or later. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/instapaper/id288545208?mt=8&ign-impt=clickRef%3DSoftware%20Page-US-Instapaper-288545208-Lockup
This was an outstanding app even before the update. Anyone who finds themselves bookmarking everything and never returning to the sites will love it. So will people that squeeze in a little surfing at work, but don't want it to turn into a lot. If you have ever emailed a link to yourself and felt like there must be a better way, Instapaper is not only a better way, it's the best way. If you frequent the web, buy this app. App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.
Couldn't live without this app. Marco is an outstanding developer, to boot. Improves the app in great, subtle ways with his updates without adding bloat. He knows what he's doing and has crafted something really special with Instapaper. Best way to read long articles later, when you have the time to actually do so.
If you don't own Instapaper, shame on you. What a terrific app. Marco also happens to have a great blog and he co-hosts a podcast on the 5by5 network where they talk about coffee…
