Is it safe to assume that iPhone4 games that are 960x640 will be full resolution on the iPad? Understand that we will still have the black box around it and controls will be too big like in current iPhone games but at least it wouldn't be pixel doubled. I think this should be the case but Apple has had nothing to say about it and I've not heard anything from developers. Is there a chance that we will need to wait for the iPad to get iOS 4? A similar question that comes to mind is what will "Universal" mean in applications? Will it need to support all 3 resolutions? I can see things getting very confusing in the app store... -Greg
I agree! I'm surprised nobody ever mentioned this. Methinks they'll do what they did with every older generation of ipods. Make the software updates nonexistent. So assume iPhone 3g/ipod will play all the games available BUT remember how there is no update to the new OS? Well figure it being a warning of 'time to upgrade.' Eventually, certain games will be made only for iphone 4 and then ipad. Then, you'll see less and less games supporting the older OS's with developers most likely blaming the slow processor. Which is true, since playing games on iphone are really slow in comparison to playing them on an ipad.
The developer of Make Coffee made a blog post about the resolution of the iPhone 4 translated to an iPad's display . . . here's the diagram he made:
Developers should at least make iPhone 4 apps render in 1024x768 if they're run on an iPad. That little effort will make the apps so much better to use. If they want to update the UI for the iPad, too, good; if not, at least the app runs full screen on the iPad.
Seems like devs will be charging us to change game resolutions. Something new to me. Some have done it for free already. But I see a lot of greed in the game section. Can I call it greed? Sure, why not...
Well at least the 960x640 apps won't look as bad in 2x mode. I think Apple should just have an option that removes that stupid button on the bottom right to switch screen modes...seriously, I don't know anyone that wants to run iPhone apps in 1x mode anyways, and that button gets accidentally pushed sometimes when playing...it's much more of a bug annoyance than anything. Also have the option to stretch out the screen so there aren't black bars on the sides and just have an iPhone logo pop up in the button right in the beginning just to let you know it's an iPhone app. I doubt there's going to be very many iPhone 4 only apps, just like the deal with the 3GS...very very few 3GS only apps. It'll most likely end up with games just updating their textures to make it look nicer on the iPhone 4 but still able to run on the older models. Probably just still be 2 markets, one for iPad and one for iPhone.
If Apple works out how universal apps chart, I think that the iPhone 3GS will finally get a lot more enhanced apps. Developers can create new universal versions of their games that utilize OpenGL 2.0 shaders for third generation iDevices and up, and improved textures for the iPhone 4 and the iPad. Then, developers can release a different app for the four iDevices left out. In this case, we'll begin to see a lot more games that utilize OpenGL 2.0. With two generations of distinct, new devices and the iPad, developers should start to create apps with OpenGL 2.0 shaders that won't run on older devices.
This is so true! iPhone games are way too small to be useful on the iPad at 1x mode. If there is some reason an application would want the option to run at 1x mode then let that be an option within the application. With a 960x640 app there is no point to having a 2x button since 1x will be pretty much full screen. -Greg
