Just wanted to hop in and agree with what the other beta testers have said about this game. It really is impressive. Like others have noted, the game has actually been recoded (read: not a emulation of the original rom), but seriously, don't let this hold you back... at all. The guys at Revolutionary Concepts obviously have a great deal of respect for the original, and have basically painstakingly re-made the game. The controls/sounds/graphics feel just like they did in the arcades. The dual stick controls work extremely well, and you'll be pulling off all your old moves/tricks in no time. I've played pretty much every retro/old game on the iDevice, and I've seen very few ports made with the respect and attention given to Karate Champ by Revolutionary Concepts (actually, one of the other high quality ports is Rev. Concept's own Cobra Command, which is well worth checking out if you haven't yet.. I believe it's still on sale). Like I think I mentioned before, if you were a fan of Karate Champ in the arcades, this is a must have. Even if you weren't, check it out, it's a great game that's still really fun today. Yeah, agreed 100%. The moves/sprites are a huge part of why I like the game. Some additions might be fun to fool around with, but I'm sure I'd always want to come back to the old arcade version.
If they ever had an extra mode with new/changed gameplay (which is not really necessary), i think removing the overlap between some moves (Middle Lunge Punch + Front Kick, for example) would be the only real change i would want, as it would allow for more "current" (90's - today) footsies.
