Greyskull : i've tried electribe a bit, because i wanted an midi sync machine drum. It's only a drum machine, there's no synth so you have to use it with a synth, like magellan or animoog (i know you know what a drum machine is ). After a while, i prefer dm1, i don't know exactly why, because it's more visual i think, it's easier for me to have a global view. And recently dm1 got midi sync, i don't try it because for the moment i go back to my laptop, with new hardware. Midi sync is a pretty rare feature on ios, i don't know exactly why, it's sebastian dittmann from audiobus who explain that it was hard to code. And midi sync is really useful after a while, if you want to go deeper. But korg app have wist feature, and it work well between them. Personnally i prefer to use drums inside polysix or ims-20, because it's "inside the app", you can switch quickly between synth and drums. Now i think you can do that easily between electribe and ims-20, through wist. Monoclespectacle: i'm on soundcloud, search "gagman", i recently made a song called "madness" entirely made with ipolysix. I've tried other songs with samplr, borderlands, audulus, magellan, animoog, sunrizer, and others... If you have an account too, i would be pleased to hear yours, and greyskull and others too! Chris1a have an account too, i like his work, beautiful harmony!
True, just got an email from...damn, forgot the name of the company. All sound packs on sale! Only 30 bucks each! Groan...I consider synthesizers to be instruments, as such, I think they should have a "native sound". Of course, when dealing with physical synths, that could end up taking up a lot of space, but if I had my druthers (and the money), I would have a floor to wall instrument collection.
I have't really set up my soundcloud account because I think the Facebook app and the Soundcloud app are having trouble recognizing each other. I might have set up an account 4 times...facebook app, ios app, from within a Korg app, and from within Tabletop. I think I broke Soundcloud I have DM1 (both for phone and ipad, BTW an update was pushed today); I'll skip iElectribe. Addictive Synth just went on sale...have to check that out. Rythm Control/DM/Ms20/Polysix/Nanostudio/Sunrizer/MidiControllerPro/imini/Tabletop/BM2/PPGWavemapper/Thumbjam/SoundprismPro/Amidio Neon Collection etc.etc.etc. all installed at once...I'm out of my mind!
I bought the iMS-20 when it was first released but I've only really played around with it once. It's quite a tricky one to get your head around. Here's the thing I created back in the day. I have various other (very old) tracks on Soundcloud, all created entirely on the iPad mostly using iSequence. https://soundcloud.com/touch-of-evil
Listened to Gagman and Touch of Evil. Madness sounds so cool, felt like I needed to be in a castle performing fiendish experiments on unwilling subjects =D Touch of Evil actually was a little more mellow than I expected. Really enjoyed ISQ Radio. Love it! I've got three pages; Lie-Fi, The Monocle Spectacle and The City of Molotov. I play all the live instruments on Lie-Fi which also features some limited Animoog stylings. Monocle Spectacle is a smattering of all my past recordings and The City of Molotov is pure NanoStudio works.
iMS-20 is a wonderful synth app, but a word of warning is it has one of the steeper learning curves. You need to understand how routing signals work. The sequencer can also be tough to get going. I've read of many people giving up on this synth because they could not figure it out. If you think you will take time to learn how to use it, then you will probably be happy. But if not, then I'd rather warn before spending $15 on an app that gets unused. For this reason, I will tend to recommend iPolySix first as it is much easier to get into and program. Plus I prefer poly synths over mono, but that is just a personal opinion. Definitely a big fan of DM1. My go to for drums probably 90% of the time. Animoog is very nice, but I don't consider it to have that "Moog" sound. Accepting that, it can produce some very nice sounds. I haven't spent as much time with it as I would like. My favorite synth (I play it almost every day) is Alchemy Mobile Pro. I don't yet have a SoundCloud account, but have been thinking about it.
Alternatively you can patch the cables randomly, get some horrible noises and make a Skinny Puppy track B-side.
About the universal vs not universal thing...One upside with music apps in particular not being universal is that you can have two instances of the same synth/app running on one device, lots of usage for that. You could sequence two instances of Sunrizer, and/or any other synths that are not universal, at the same time. You could have one instance of Magellan running as a modular effects unit in Audiobus and the other Magellan as input. And so on. Having the iPad version being universal and a separate iPhone version would of course be ideal from a consumers perspective.
Ooohh, Skinny Puppy you say? That's my kind of electronic music. I have Polysix already...hell, I'll grab it. Any opinions on Addictive Synth while it's still on sale?
Heh I'm the same. I buy them all. I used to buy tons of expensive VSTs but synths are so cheap now we're spoilt! EDIT Addictive Synth wasn't for me. It's a got a very cold sound. Hard to describe. But I'm not keen on Animoog or Grain Science either. You might like it but I like the simple viritual analogue ones like Sunrizer and iMini. Good old fashioned techno, house, synthpop sounds. Having said that I can play with Alchemy for hours just making weird drones! Ha ha. Good old iOS!
Yeah, I'll probably skip addictive ( I just bought and installed iMS-20). Next for me will probably be a granular synthesizer...maybe PPG Wavemapper or Wavemapper 2. Looks like a lot of fun can be had with those.
I would recommend Addictive for creating breathing, evolving pads as well as the fantastic arpeggiator. It's one of the most unique additive synths on the App Store. As for granular, go with Grain Science for some hybrid Va/granular sounds, with a very deep modulation structure. Go with iPulsaret for classic granular synthesis. Alchemy is also majorly a granular synth.
I have Alchemy and love it. PPG just has me intrigued...it looks sorta like a 3-d oscilloscope which you can manipulate and fine tune.
Wavemapper is a must-buy. That's why I didn't say anything about it I would not recommend WaveGenerator though, especially if you have Animoog. And although I really like Alchemy, I can't get into the limiting editing options. The actual engine is amazing, but it's all behind the curtains. Although you can cook your own presets by editing the preset files by using something like iFunbox.
PPG looks cool. The PPG Wave VST was great. Alphaville/Depeche-tastic! Alchemy certainly makes you lust for the full desktop version!
So I've bought Alchemy since my last post...great synth for a great price, one of my favorite instrument apps, along with Impaktor (which goes to show that there are plenty of quality music apps that don't cost an arm and a leg). After reading an online rant about Auria, I think I'll look for a more user friendly DAW. I'm using a touchscreen; Using knobs which appear to have been photographed from a professional mixing panel seems to defeat the purpose...if I had precision control over the knobs, like with a mouse, that would be a different story. Not to mention the issues users have had with tracks freezing due to a lack of hardware memory (though I suppose that's a limitation of the platform). To the point: iKaosollator is back on sale. I've played with them in real life and they are damned fun, but I don't know about the ios implementation. Especially since there is no Audiobus, correct? And it's a pretty old app. Any opinions on iKaosollator? I don't have iElectribe, but it's more of a dance music drum machine, right? House and the like? Because I don't give a whit about house/dance/etc...and I have DM1, Molten, Nanostudio, the drum machines built into other Korg apps, etc. mostly I just would like to hear any opinions on IKasollator. Though I really need to get PPG first.
Audiobus supported. Can be pretty dancy but has fun and clean application. If you'd like to hear some samples my Lie-Fi Soundcloud page has a set "Phrom the Fone" which is all Audiobus songs using iKaossilator as the cornerstone. Personal opinion: I love it. Been doing remixes along with originals. It makes composing quick loops easy or if you just want to throw a beat and some synth/fx over a song.
It is damned fun! Haven't used it much in any serious sense though. For me it was like the Tenori On - just a couple of bucks to play with some cool hardware I'm never going to afford? Instabuy! Poly Six is calling my name again... If only I had my own iPad... Oh, and back to iKaosollator - the implementation actually looks cheesy IMHO - they did not try to emulate the hardware look, and that ends up being fine. The functionality here is great. Like you said, what good are photo-realistic knobs if you can't control them well? Side tracking, (again!) most of my "music time" was spent with Bebot in Audiobus - works very well with glitch1 and JamUp... (Also the BM2 update has vastly improved AB usage!)
Korg ipolysix http://appshopper.com/music/korg-ipolysix also on sale 14.99 at the moment. anyone tried it ? (well yes, but whats it like?)
