If you have 2 already then get 3. If you don't have 2, get X.

Yeah, picked up X as well and I'm so surprised by how good the controls are. SNK really overdid themselves with this port.

About to pick up MS 1 and 3(since 2 and X really aren't that much different) because they're so well made. The only thing that bothers me is the slowdown, I think that has to do with the game engine itself since metal slug has always faced slowdowns (even on computers)

    Just picked up X.

So if I have 3 and X, is 1 recommended?

Enjoyed 3 and X looks good too, just wondering if 1 stacks up well against those.

    Thanks

1 is a lot shorter than 3 and X if I remember my childhood correctly. I haven't played it in a long time, but I would imagine the difference between getting it and not getting it is additional content. 1 Does have some enjoyable memories though, like fighting that naked guy with the giant machine gun. You also have to consider the price. It's only 1.99. If you think you'd make a better purchase by saving two bucks, then you decide. :)

edit: for those asking; the game gives you 20 credits (20 quarters) to start the game. Definitely possible to beat the game, unless you're terrible. I just made it through missions 1-4 without dying 8)

Custom video filters on/off , 3 aspect ratios ( 4:3, 16: 9, window ), scanlines can also be turned on for extra retro look. There are 4 difficulty settings avaliable and 2 game modes:arcade ( original mode as you would play it on arcade) and mission mode ( in which you can choose any mission you unlocked and start playing from it ).
Metal slug 1 is shortest and has some terrible slowdowns at last 2 missions and when starting some missions that actually make some parts unplayable as you get like 5 FPS at time, not to mention loosing countless lives there. It features only "regular" enemies , you won't see aliens, zombies, etc here, but bosses don't dissapoint and this is only Metal Slug that has animated ending cutscene, and a very nice one to add.
Metal slug 3 has slowdowns only when there is lot of enemies at same time on screen, but they aren't nearly as bad as slowdowns in Metal Slug 1.Very enjoyable, Definetly has a LOT of variety in enemies and different slugs/ weapons avaliable , from regular soldiers ,zombies, robots, aliens , insects, yetis, etc...Also has different paths in all missions so replay value is higher than with others.Metal Slug artwork can be unlocked from game gallery which is a nice touch.Bosses effects and effects overall will blow your mind in this installment, more than amazing quality.
Metal Slug X is perfect balance between 1 and 3.It features some "unordinary" enemies and lot of weapon , enemies and slugs variety.Bosses are done with much more flair than MS 1, but still don't completely measure to ones in MS 3 , but I will admit there are exceptions ;).It has very nice effects, and some might even look better than MS 3 ( as this was a remastered game released later ).Overall difficulty is very well balanced compared to easy MS 1 and extreme MS 3.

Avoid Metal Slug 2 as it is simply stripped down version of MS X, only if you are hardcore MS fan or/ and have childhood memories of it and can't resist urge :p

  10. I got Metal slug 3, love it on my icade core. Curious if metal slug x plays any better icade wise. Will let you all know tonight.

Thanks Aventador. I went ahead and pulled trigger on 1 as well. Good breakdown.

  13. Icade Core Metal Slug X vs 3 Report
    ----------------------------------------

Played a little bit of both X and 3 today. I was curious most of all which had better icade core joystick controls, although this report is more just a comparison between them.

Bottom line, X is much funner to me than 3. The menus and such are ipad retina, 3 is not.

Framerates seemed smoother in X than 3. 3 felt more like a computer emulation, X seems more like a true arcade game.

3 is older than X on ios, and it shows.

    Both are good though.

Gameplay is faster on X, so more frantic and arcade like.

Music and sounds are a lot clearer on X, can hear a little hiss in 3.

Both have great icade core support, but X seems more like a true arcade game.

Couldn't figure out though if it was a better icade integration, or just that X was better and faster.

Final thinking, X is much better than 3 on ios. Get X, and buy an icade core joystick and use hdmi tv for a true console arcade experience.

Screenshot of X with my icade core. Sexy!

I am almost positive they didn't bother with retina only on MSX, they just straight ported it like other ones. What you see as a "higher resolution" in MSX is actually support for better hardware it was used on at time it was released back in 1999 and some more custom effects , also it is only Metal Slug on iOS that has not a single slowdown if I remember correctly from my walktrough.
I would still choose MS 3 over MS X any day as it has huge variety of almost anything in it and gameplay value is much higher than of MSX.

  18. I dunno, I don't have 1. Maybe I'll pick it up cause they play well on my icade core. But it'll go back on sale sometime or other, so I may hold off until I play more of x and 3. X seems pretty cool though, maybe if I play it more tomorrow, I'll get an urge to get 1.

Anyone know if 1 is closer to x or to 3?

  19. If you notice, I said menus and such, not the actual game, it is not retina. But because the menus are retina, the feel of the games seems much more professional.

You might he right about content, but the game when playing on my icade core, seems so much faster, frantic, better framerates, way better sound, better retina menus on X.

Not quite sure if you are comparing the arcade versions or the ios ports either. 3 was the first port on ios, so I would have to believe that dotemu got better with 1 and then 2 then x.

So are you comparing arcade versions, or do you have both 3 and x on ios versions?

Closer to X regarding enemies and variety, but as I mentioned , has rather annoying slowdowns at some places after mission 3.It will probably look worse as you played both MSX and MS3 before it, but well worth investment if you like whole MS vibe and gameplay.
