I think that most gamers are wishing for something they will never get back, for the most part. A sense of newness. Unfortunately you only get that when you first start gaming. I think that new gamers get that feeling with any of the current great games they play.

I've been playing video/computer games since Pong on consoles and the original Apple ][ for computers. Yes, I spent hours playing what would now be considered mindlessly simple games. They can still be fun on occasion, but I wouldn't give up current console experiences like Uncharted 2 to go back to the older style of game. I think there is room for both the older style and newer ones.

I don't think the lack of save feature necessarily made the older games good. They just made it impossible for many people to complete the games. I'm admittedly mediocre when it comes to skill at playing many arcade games. I still enjoyed them quite a bit, but I taught myself to get what enjoyment I could from a game and then move on to something else rather than just stick with the same level of a game getting progressively more frustrated. As a result, I've played relatively few games through to completion. But, the ones that grabbed me, such as the aforementioned mentioned Uncharted 2, the early Ultima games, and so on have stuck with me. I tend to miss having more games like that, which don't just rely on twitch reflex skill, but have great stories that involve me for hours. I've played pretty much every Mario platformer that I know of, but actually finished very few. That doesn't mean I didn't have a great time with them, though.

Ah... I remember the good old NES days. :)
Haha I remember that running game with the pad and how cool it was.

But a couple of my favorite games on it were Battle Toads, Kid Icarus, duck hunt, etc.
Speaking of Duck Hunt, I still don't get how that dang gun works! It seems like magic!

But, on subject- I believe the problem now days is that kids have A- shorter attention spans, and B- More options. If a kid can't beat a level, he'll get mad and move on to another game. I've done it before.
I miss difficulty in games though. I might be a Sony fan, but I'll admit that Halo really nailed it with legendary mode in the first two. I wish games had something more like that.

@Hitch: Yea, games are definitely not as difficult as they once were, but the graphics, and visuals certainly make up for it!

I love all systems, but if I had to choose only one, it would have to be a Nintendo product, simply because they make really good games.

Kid Icarus was a ton of fun!

Games that spark fond memories for me are:

Mega Man 2 (NES) (the Best Mega Man title to date)
    Secret of Mana (SNES)
    Chrono Trigger (SNES)
    Duck Tales (NES)
    Sonic 1 and 2 (Genesis)
Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis)
World of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis)
    Super Mario 64 (N64)
    Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast)
    Paper Mario (N64)
    Luigi's Mansion (Gamecube)
    Castlevania SOTN (PS1)
    Legend of Mana (PS1)
    Jumping Flash 2 (PS1)
    Yoshi's Island (SNES)
    Super Mario World (SNES)
    Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
    Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
    Wario Ware (Gameboy Advance)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
    Super Mario Land (Gameboy)

I notice a theme with these titles.... a LOT of them came out when the systems debuted :)

False, Mario 3 had one of the best save systems for it's time, it was called 'Leave Your NES On All Day While You're At School But Shut Off The TV'.

My cousin would do the Final Fantasy 3 trick, when you're at that river raft part, if you tape down a couple buttons you can go round and round and level up tons of experience. He would leave it on for like 2 days and all the characters (except Locke I think) would be like level 80. Shit pissed me off, always told him I hope he fries his SNES lol.

My grandma gave me a NES when I was 8... I still consider it one of the best presents I've ever received. I had the original Mario/Duck Hunt and a golf game...

I got VERY good at Mario.

Then when I was 10, I got Mario 3... and after about 3 months, many tantrums, and my mom always screaming "QUIT THROWING YOUR CONTROLLER, YOU'RE GONNA BREAK IT!!!!" - she bought me the guide that showed you some of the harder to reach places, and full level maps...

I've now beaten it more times than I can count...

I still play a LOT of NES (and SNES/SEGA) games. I don't have any of the consoles anymore... but I've got emulators, and a SNES style USB controller. After I got the controller, I deleted EVERY game I had on my computer... Bioshock 2, Borderlands, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space...

And now all I play is my iPod and old nes/snes era games. There are a few 'difficult' games in the app store... but not many... it took me about 3 weeks to beat the 12 levels that Pizza Boy has... and I spent countless hours on Bombardier's Guild... I don't think I'll ever beat that one. Now I generally gravitate towards RPG games in the appstore... just because they actually take time to get through.

quantumsheep brought up having easier direct routs while making some items harder to get... this is what I think Mario is. Soosiz is a good one too... games that can be played and beat by a 10 year old, and still frustrate the hell out of people in their 20's-30's is a GREAT game (by my standards anyway...).

sorry... got off topic sorta... Yes, gamers today are lazy and most do have VERY short attention spans.

You could always surround yourself with oldschool games... a generic USB controller (without analog sticks) is only about $3-$5. =o)

Exactly. I had more of a chance at beating up the real Mike Tyson than I did at beating him in the game.

Also, I'm pretty sure Spy Hunter had no end, and I wasted hours, days, weeks trying to get there.
