Remarkably, there does not appear to be a "Best Sports Games" thread. I'm tempted to create one, just so I can link to it, but that would almost be cheating.
Some stuff added...also a few areas where we I didnt spot a decent thread noted as well. Please help if you are aware of any threads that will help. When I have time I will try to designate a "recommended" thread in each category so that future posts get concentrated there (hopefully)
Added time management genre threads and the new thread on top 5 platformers. Occurs to me that there must be some good threads on top line-drawing/flight control type games. Too tired to search ATM, will do tomorrow but if anyone wants to help, that would be awesome.

The thread on "platformers" is actually a top 5 list for many genres not just platformers. It's new so it hasn't got multiple genres yet, but it will do.
I thought the thread was called platformers and you were going to do separate threads for other genres...will look again. Also, please note that I couldnt find a decent thread on guitar-hero style music/rythm games, and you seem like the right guy to fix that
