Are there any good newbie guides for those of us who haven't played a MH game before? This game is so overwhelming to me right now.

With a hammer you really dont need to use any of those. Do you have access Quake resistance skills? Coz that'd help in the DPS a lot. If not, it's fine, but you need some distance so as not to be affected by quake when you are superpounding his legs when he is walking high (you'll understand this when you see it :)).

    Basically, your pattern would be:

    1. If Shen is walking low, Triple Pound the body (part where the legs meet.)
    2. If shen is walking high, pick a leg, charge your hammer, and when he steps with that leg, get closer, superpound it and roll out. If you have Quake res, you can get closer (the distance may need practice though) earlier and deal a triple pound instead.
    3. If shen flinches when you are underneath him, hurry and triple pound his face twice.

    Notes:
    - When shen is attacking the fortress there are a few things to consider. One, when his CLAWS are away from the fortress, you are safe to position anywhere to deal damage to the legs. And two, when his CLAWS are facing the fortress, DO NOT STAY IN THE INSIDES OF HIS LEGS. Stay outside his legs when you hit them.

    - Each leg can be flinched twice (gets red and "redder"). Once each leg is flinched twice, Shen will fall to the ground and give you 4 (or 5? forgot) triple pound openings to his face.

    - Try to count the number of hits you deal to a leg before it flinches. You can use this to your advantage so you can flinch Shen while he is attacking the fortress, effectively preventing him from doing damage to the fortress. Basically, you deal enough hits to a leg until just before you flinch it. Then, concentrate on other legs. When Shen tries to attack the fortress, attack the almost flinched leg to stop him from dealing damage.

    - You can use the Lock-on labels on his legs to memorize which leg is about to flinch.

    - If you are doing consistent damage to the leg, you should be able to kill it just before the mission timer ends. Else, as long as you keep to these tactics and prevent about 2 of his attacks to the fortress from dealing damage, you should be at least able to repel him.

Good luck hunting Shen Gaoren! Looking forward to seeing you hunt with high rank gear soon!

What do you guys (especially the new players like myself) use for hunting down smaller monsters like for example Giaprey?

And a general question: can one capture those smaller monsters too or is this only possible with those bigger enemies?

Knowledge mainly: you need to know where they spawn (usually the same areas in a map), then you'll always find them there: they usually don't run away, and they might respawn if you leave the area and come back.
I've noticed that in quests where you need to slay a specific number of critters that in some areas the monsters do not spawn back (they might after a while?), then you need to move on and visit the other areas.

I don't think capture is possible. If that matters, I've read somewhere that traps do not work on smaller monsters.

Thanks a lot! I should have stated my first question a little more precisely as I meant weapons but your answer solved another question of mine! ;)

I find that weapons with a wide angle of attack helps a lot (i.e. Heavy Sword swipe attack) as well as weapons that allow you to run. I started out with a hammer and the good thing with that weapon is it allows you to run while the weapon is unsheathed and even allows you to charge it while running! So I just run while charging and once I catch up to them, boom pound them to the face (sometimes making them dizzy in the process)! :) That said I also miss a lot of times due to the slow or short range / narrow angles of attach of the hammer but have good opportunities especially while they're distracted by my Felyne who's also wielding a hammer.

I finished MHTri and played a lot online using only GS and LS. I've been trying lance and gunlance now and I'm really liking it! It's a very different way to play the game, so refreshing.

Can anyone provide me with some tips for the second village urgent quest (2 star Khezu)?

I have some pretty solid equipment (using a good hammer and upgraded armor) and I've taken down multiple 5 star quests in online rooms, but for some reason I still either run out of time or get wrecked by Khezu.

Which traps/bombs/etc are effective for chipping him down faster?

    oh weapon-wise?
It seems from what I've read that usually people usually stick to one weapon type and switch only if necessary (the monster is too hard to beat otherwise) or if they want to spice things up a bit.
So an answer would be: whatever weapon you feel more comfortable with.

For now I am using a hunting horn which half fits what Savant wrote (wide angle).

easiest way to beat khezu is to just keep your hammer drawn and run circles around him. Use the 2 hit combo with the powerful smash thingy (cancel with a roll afterwards for fast recovery). As long as you are cautious with him you can pretty much wreck him without getting damaged at all.

hit him as he does the triple electric ranged thing, hit him after landing from the jump, and don't underestimate his electric charge thing on his body (has longer range than it looks and lasts longer than it seems). Also when running circles around him, keep in mid range so that in case he screams, you won't get hit by his electric charge

tldr: be patient, keep on mid range, run circles around him, just unload once everytime he has an opening and roll away to safety. He's ready to trap when he stays perfectly still and leaves
