Ok... Sounds like it's all about dealing the right amount of DPS that's the problem.

What equips are you using now? And which Lao Shan Lung Quest is this?

Reason im asking is that you may have not the optimal equips to take him on, since you havent even dealt enough damage to repel him.

If you're using the GS, dont use the charged attack too much or it'll get you behind his stomach. Use the charges when you are too far ahead of his stomach, or when Lao is turning on path corners.

Dont waste your time with bombs. The only useful thing about the bombs is breaking the head, or dealing damage to the head in the last area. Bombs wont have a higher DPS when you need to unsheathe, plant bombs, and detonate it compared to doing the side slash>overhead slash combos.

Bombs are useful on the head to break it twice because bombs deal the same damage anywhere, while your GS deals less damage to teh head. I dont recommend damaging the head in every area except the first (to break horn) and last areas (while the stomach isnt accessible yet) because you'll overflinch him, and you'll have less time to get him to zero while in the last area.
