You could try replacing the digitizer(which I assume is what's broken[the outer-most piece of glass that registers your touches]) yourself with an inexpensive replacement online, plus the following 'teardown' guide from ifixit. I've replaced said digitizer for an iPhone 3G and a 1st and 2nd gen Ipod Touch myself and it's not that difficult, if you're patient. -- Replacement digitizer from Amazon($14.93 USD, including the tools needed): http://www.amazon.com/Screen-Glass-Digitizer-Ipod-Touch/dp/B002AOUPS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266882073&sr=8-1-spell -- iFixit 'Teardown' guide for 2nd gen iPod Touch: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod-Touch-2nd-Generation/586/1 So all in all you can repair your iPod for around $20 USD shipped from Amazon, given you have the patience to do so. Just take your time and be VERY careful when disassembling your iPod as it contains tiny ribbon cables here and there that are very fragile. You'll see all of that in the ifixit guide though. I hope this helps. Best of luck, - danrel
just by a new one.... save time, only a little more than the cost to repair it, and you get a new ipod
Try fixing the screen first. You never know, it might work out, and it's honestly not that big of a risk unless you're really short on cash.
I'm assuming that danrel is suggesting the purchase of a glass and digitizer combo here. Attaching a new digitizer to a piece of old glass is nearly impossible. If you end up going the home repair route, make sure you get the two pieces already together. By this I mean read Ebay auctions carefully. Also, if you decide to self repair- open the device up before ordering anything and check the condition of your LCD. If you find any inky blotches you'll need to replace that piece too.
The outerglass of any iPod Touch/iPhone IS the digitizer. You cannot buy the glass minus the digitizer because they are permantly attached and one in the same. The glass underneath is only the LCD screen itself. Trust me, like I said I've done it myself many a time before. It's not hard at all, it just takes patience. But yes, definitely check the LCD for any discoloration when you turn the iPod on. If it looks funky, you're going to need an LCD as well. Just follow the links I've included in my first post in this thread and you'll be fine. Don't listen to s0mah as he/she has obviously never repaired such a device. Just follow the links, save yourself a ton of money....or don't. $15 is a lot cheaper than any iPod replacement that you're going to find.
For those interested on about the crack. I know it doesn't look like much but at the same time I miss watching stuff without a big crack on the screen. oh and the back of my iPod. Reason I don't want to give in my iPod. The stickers on the back. EDIT: Need to resize the images Edit: Done
Read my comment above. By the look of those images, only your digitizer is cracked, which is only a $15 DIY job. If you're competent with electronics disassembly/reassembly, you shouldn't have any issue repairing it yourself. I really don't understand why most people here feel that you should buy a new one! It'd be a a complete waste of money to buy new/refurbed just due to a cracked digitizer.
