I've played a few online games, and they were nearly seamless. I only had killer lag on one level, but that might've been due to one of the people I was playing against [sometimes that happens..no idea why] Overall though, its pretty fun.
Have you played the game? If you haven't actually played the game and have only seen videos, I can see where you're coming from, because when I saw the videos I thought the graphics would suck. When I actually played the game, they were excellent. Also, the multiplayer is not laggy, unless you get someone with a bad connection. Anyways, I would go with N.O.V.A. over Avatar; but that's because I prefer FPS's over adventure games.
