I'm gonna buy a new computer. I'm stuck on a decision between an iMac or a Dell Studio One 19 Desktop (I'm reading it off the offer sheet). The Dell has:

    • Intel Premium Processor E5400 (2.70Ghz)
    • Pre-loaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    • 4GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory
    • 500GB Hard-Drive
    • Intergrated NVIDIA GeForce 9200 Graphics Card
    • 18.5 inch monitor

I don't know the detail of the iMac, the one that costs $1200 (I think that AUD$1599).

    Can you help me?

edit: The Dell costs AUD$1099 (thats less than US$1000, Probs about $920) including delivery.

??? Don't get that Dell, thats crap! My desktop (before I modded it) was 800 Euro's/1000 dollars, with an i7 860 (2.8GHz Quad Core) 1,5TB Hard Drive, 1GB Nvidia Gt220 (upgraded to HD5850), 6GB DDR3 RAM.

WTF dell is ripping off, even more than apple.

Did you seriously make an option for Dell?

Don't get a Dell. I swear they have timers in them tat cause them to self destruct after a predetermined period. Windows doesn't help matters either.

You'll regret not getting a Mac, especially after a year or so when the person who bought the Mac you would have bought is still enjoying his like new computer and you're screaming "I started you up and hour ago! WTF are you doing?!? Now WTF is that?!?"

When you're asking about Mac vs. Dell on an Apple based forum, you're bound to have a biased response. You're better off asking on an unbiased technical forum, if I'm honest.

Anyway, my not-so-powerful Dell's lasted me a good 4-5 years and counting, even though I use it for gaming almost everyday.

I actually don't care much for the OS, Apple's computers definitely have high build quality ad better hardware though

Unless you think you'll be gaming a lot, you'd be better off with a Mac. And that dell you listed here wont be much good at gaming with integrated Intergrated NVIDIA GeForce anyways.

Take a look at iMacs or MBP. Find out if they fit your needs (and budget) and get the base models,. Upgrade the RAM, HDD yourself (apple unbelievably rips you off when it comes to these upgrades. May be they dont want to bother doing these upgrades themselves). And if for some reason you dont like OSX you can always get a copy of Win7 and install it on your Mac. So you're fail safe here.

Don't get a dell, I had one and it was a real pain. Either get the iMac or an ASUS. My ASUS hasn't failed me since I bought it.

Someone who knows how to keep a computer running like new can keep it that way. People who dont know how to run one get a Mac. But Macs are still good computers, but Windows based systems can be the same. And a Mac will have most of the same parts under the hood as any other computer. Apple just doesnt have to support all hardware so they can focus on making those parts work their best.

If your not a gamer, get the Mac.

I don't know much about Macs, but just don't get a Dell.
As kcur said, ASUS is another good make. They are generally good for gaming and reasonably priced too.

I though about getting a Mac months ago but I went with Dell instead similar to this model http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/studio-xps-8100/pd.aspx?refid=studio-xps-8100&s=dhs&cs=19

I've heard some pretty horrible things about Dell but I have zero problems with mine. I think it's a gaming machine series but I just wanted a fast machine. I paid a little over $1000 for it and it has the i7 2.80ghz quad core processor, 8 gigs of ram and Nvidia 260gtx card (This got me into pc gaming again) and 1 tb hard drive.

a $1200 iMac will get you a core 2 duo processor along with half the Ram and space. I guess this isn't a huge deal if you are only using it for non gaming or editing purposes but why pay more when there are better deals around?

Crashing and breaking after a few months. I have a iMac and an ASUS. Both are good machines, although I wish I didn't need to pay for my anti-virus for Windows.

I had a Dell and it ran like crap, although maybe their laptops are better, I wouldn't know.

Well the deal was that me and my bro put in $250 each and my parents put in $500. The Mac is $500 more...

Good God man, not a Dell!

Using a Dell machine could be constituted as self-harm.

Okay, I think Dell isn't an option anymore. Can anyone recommend a good computer at a fair price?

I wouldn't get a Dell, I'd build your own PC, it will be much better and cheaper that way.

    Don't buy a Mac.
