There are quite a few pretty good Retina enhanced games. I don't need to worry too much about lazy or ignorant developers anymore. With some very notable exceptions (10tons games, Neuroshima Hex, etc.) I only buy Retina. Why would I subject my pretty eyes to anything less?

Your priorities are totally wrong and you probably judge women primarily by their looks too, so... you wouldn't. Go retina.

My priorities are just fine. Happily married to a beautiful woman for 10 years and happily married to good games that take advantage of the platform I purchase them on. If the smaller devs can do it, the bigger ones can as well. On a happy note, the situation seems to be improving.

Are you forgiving of the non-retina games that were in development before the iPhone 4 was released? Or do you think they should have been "upgraded" too? Development on Sonic 4, for example, started in 2009.

Yeah who cares if the gameplay is crap so long as it looks pretty? This is why gamers get a bad rap.

    Are you talking about me?

If so, please explain how I've been "trolling?"

What's "garbage" about anything I've said so far?

Here's a summary of some of the points I've made -
    • The retina display is still relatively new, and you shouldn't expect every game to be compatible with it. It takes time to test and optimize a game engine to work well with new technologies.
    • iOS gamers should be considerate of the hard work that goes into "upgrading" a game for retina display. This work can't be done over night. Depending on the size of the game, it can take weeks, even months, to reprocess and optimize all the graphics, especially if they're in 2D.
    • If a game was in development almost 6 months before the iPhone 4 was released, you shouldn't expect the developers to toss out all the work they completed just to redo the graphics for your device.
There might be too many iDevices to cater to now. Developers have to make their games work on old / slower devices, iPads, iPhones with older displays, and now iPhones with retina display. Developers shouldn't have to work extra hard to make a game work on all of these, so you can't throw a temper tantrum when someone gets left out.

    What say you?

And that is simply laziness by SEGA. They don't need a new engine, they need to optimize the current one just a little bit. They have the assets, why not use them? Laziness. ""

You make good points. What you don't understand is that we either
    a) Agree with you.
    or
    b) Don't care.

People are allowed to think what they want. I personally don't care whether a game supports the display or not, that doesn't mean I have the right to judge people on their opinion.
If someone's criteria for a rating any higher than one star is retina support, that's their decision. And every dev is in the same boat.

Seriously, I didn't want to have to do this, but just for you, here is my secret three step plan to help you deal with these feelings you're having:

    1. Cry me a river.
    2. Build me a bridge.
    3. Get the F&*% over it.

I'm really curious to see how this is all going to play out... Many of you think anything over $0.99 is too expensive, and yet you expect every game to have Xbox 360 quality graphics. The harder you make it for developers, the less they're going to want to deal with us. I bet you'll start caring when they start leaving...

Stop saying you this and you that. Christ Jesus!

I am one of the people who is willing to pay a premium price for a premium game. Chinatown Wars for example, I would have happily paid $40 for it.

I care for quality gaming on my iOS devices. I don't care for your cynicism and your condescension.

    ""

Well, it's not ME who's giving SEGA, EA, and the rest a hard time...

    Amen to that.

Oh I'm sorry, it's just that when you quote me I kind of assume you are referring to me when you say you.

And I'm not giving SEGA, EA or anyone else a hard time. Except for you. Because you are annoying me.

    Everybody is stupid

The RETINA display is not just a better screen.

If you compare a standard def (non-retina) game and compare the quality between the 3gS and the iPhone 4, the 3GS will look better. A good comparison would be to play a ps2 game on an SD TV. Then play it on a 50'' 1080p LCD. The graphic quality drops significantly on the larger, higher res screen.

SOOOOO, when people complain about retina/no retina, it is pretty well justified as the newer device makes what used to look great, kind of fugly now.

A gaming console gets out-dated every 5 or so years. A smartphone gets updated yearly. Personally, I think it's the old-device carriers that kill the quality of the app store. Developers having to cater to an out-dated device hinder the natural progression of computing. People, your iPod touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3G are old. They're fine for basic apps but if you want good games, empty your pockets a little. No such thing as a free lunch.

A company's ultimate goal is "SURVIVAL."
So when I read this horseshit about "if you piss off the gaming companies, they'll leave." Yeah, when people complain about a car or a soft-drink, FORD and COCA COLA just leave the game.

Here's a free lesson in common-freaking-sense. Modern combat sandstorm 2 is worth $20+ IMO. I only paid $6.99. Do you know why? Because of people not buying anything over $0.99. It's called supply and demand. Not to mention, that all gaming developers have agreed that the mobile market space is the profitable future. For a gaming company to give up on mobile would be like blockbuster dismissing instant streaming as the future of video rental. Oh, oops , they did and now they're declaring a chapter 7 BR.

My point, complain away about no retina, too expensive, and wanting the world for free. Could you imagine the app store if people didn't. I can see it now. -------NFS: shift = $19.99 ------- doodle jump = $9.99.

This was explained like, four pages ago. Thanks for adding nothing of use.

This thread has turned into an endless feedback loop of people who obviously fail at reading comprehension.

A lot of people are trying to compete with the app store, and in recent years the Droid Market has been gaining a lot of ground. If other markets catch up, and prove to be more profitable than the App Store, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict what might happen next.

Try to think about this in years instead of months...

Where do you think the App Store will be 5 years from now?

All of the stupid 1 star votes just because a game doesn't have retina display hurts the game's rating, hurts sales, and is making the App Store a miserable place to be for developers.

Do you know how much it costs to make a game like Modern Combat 2? Or to run a company like Gameloft? Luckily for them, they have a great momentum going right now, and an army of programmers and graphic artists at their disposal. But a lot of smaller developers can barely afford advertising, let alone the time and effort that it takes to upgrade a game for Super Awesome Retina Display™.
