All I'm looking for is something simple, with maybe a little more customization options, and most importantly the ability to sync notes with a Windows desktop app using wifi (from the device). I thought something like this would be easy to find since Apple's notes app is so lacking, but I've had no luck. The closest I've found is evernote, which has 2 problems: - The description suggests it requires an Internet connection, though I've read elsewhere that it doesn't. - I can't install it anyway, because the programmer was smoking crack the day he decided to write the Windows client and thought it would be a good idea to use MS's terrible .NET framework, which has NEVER worked for me (tried both XP and Vista 32-bit). I've tried installing it 3 times, all of which have failed while installing the .NET shit. If anyone knows an alternative syncing app that doesn't have this crapware bundled with it, please let me know. Other than that I've found Simplenote and Writeroom, but as far as I can tell for some strange reason both of those only support syncing with web apps (which isn't so good for long plane journeys, when I'd just like to edit files I have on my iPhone using my laptop), not local wifi. Can anyone recommend an app that fills these criteria?
I have used Evernote but I prefer Awesome Note. It doesn't sync with a desktop application, but it looks nice and works very well. Appigo Notebook is very good too. Awesome Notes syncs with Google docs and Notebook with Toodledo.
In most cases I'd say both of those are great apps, but that problem is when you're overseas, Internet access is far from a guarantee, and there's no using 3G unless you enjoy bankrupting yourself with roaming data charges. Meaning basically, the web app requirement is a deal killer. :/ I initially thought Appigo's notebook app would work, since I know the same company makes a desktop sync client, but it turns out that software doesn't actually support their own app.
I currently use NoteMaster. I bought it on the strength of the reviews and what I needed. Sounds like this might be a good fit for you.
Also, I just remembered that if you buy the full Goodreader app, using the Manage Files section, you can make new text notes and use Goodreader to upload them. No auto syncing though.
I tried. I manged to get it working (by using a version that didn't require the .NET upgrade), but it turns out it can't actually sync anything over my wifi. I just find it all a bit ridiculous. Air sharing and Readdledocs don't force me to go through their server when I want to transfer files, nor did iFile back when I used that. Stanza doesn't make me use their server to browse and sync books from my library. All those apps work absolutely fine with just a local wifi network and no Internet connection - why can't a notes app be the same? Don't get me wrong, online backup is a great feature, but not being able to synchronize 2 local copies just because the online one is not available isn't a feature, it's just bad design. I think Readdle and AirSharing can do that too, and that's probably what I'll end up using with the way things are looking now, but I was really hoping there'd be at least one app more suited to that purpose. Basically something that looks and feels like SimpleNote or NoteMaster but with a wifi sync option for people who don't want to pay outlandish roaming fees (I believe it's around $20 per megabyte in most cases, "only" $5 in others...what a joke).
Found one (Syncbook), but it's Mac only. Jesus christ, is this really so complicated? I've managed to find some obscure things in the app store, yet somehow can't find a simple notes app that supports syncing on the most common OS without forced online backups or need for an Internet connection?
