Just noticed that Handy Chess, which I originally paid for, is free. It is for playing chess online via FICS on your iphone. It does not appear to have been meaningfully updated in the year since I got it, and is lacking a lot of the features found in the FICS GUIs available for use on the PC including, I think, any chat, and any sort of display of opposing seeks. Just from typing in FICS and surfing reviews, it appears there is a better iphone app for playing on FICS, but it is 4.99, and this one is quite adequate. This is currently the best *free* app for playing *live* (not "push") chess *as far as I know*. If you dont know what FICS is, an iphone app may not be the best place to start, but you can google FICS if you would like to start playing online chess for free. As far as I know, all of these apps are a little/lot dodgy unless you have a wifi connection.
