People and their loud music in public places

This is part rant, part question. Half the time I board the bus in the morning to get to university, there will be some moron listening to very loud music on the bus, so loud that everyone on the bus can hear every word of the lyrics. Everyone will stare at him, hinting to lower the volume, but the idiot continues as if he didn't see. What's worse is that it's always some garbage music, either rap with swearing words every line or heavy metal so loud you could barely make out the noise from the words. I don't think these people are mentally disabled or something, as they look like students to me, is it just the new fad or something to force everyone to hear the crap you listen to? To me it would make more sense if it was actually music that they wanted to share early in the morning. Or is it because they're not using earphones at all and simply playing the music out loud? Or using earphones that leak out sound 360 degrees? They seemed to be using Apple earbuds, which I believe should be pretty high quality. I've used the cheapest earphones before, and they certainly don't leak sound as bad as this.

Apple earbuds leak sound when the volume is turned almost all the way up or they didn't wear it right. I think also that they got their volumes so high their whole head is vibrating out sound.

If it's not at their house (I don't mind blaring music as long as it's less than once a month), I'm pissed. If it's leaking out of their ears, I just know they're gonna have the hearing of a NASA space shuttle launch observer. Makes me feel better.

yeah, they're just being obnoxious and ruinng their own hearing...unfortunately we have to be subjected to their noise while they're doing it

+1 a lot of times it also seems to depend on the earphones...some seem so poorly designed that the people on the outside hear more than the people wearing them

The answer to this is that it is fun. It is fun to listen to music really loudly and it gets you pumped up. To the people listening, it isn't trash music and I am sure everyone here likes to share something they like. Music is really easy to share all the time. While I am driving I often turn my music up quite loud and sometimes roll down the windows. I don't listen to rap or heavy metal but it is still great fun. I remember seeing an article come through my RSS feeds that gave some health benefits of blasting music, but can't remember them now nor what site it was from.

I used to listen to loud metal on the bus at 60-70% volume, but now I don't usually go above 50%. My earphones are in-ear so I thnk it makes it harder for others to hear?

  10. That's one of the reasons I use in-ear monitors. They prevent outside sound from leaking in, but at the same time prevent inside sound from leaking out. Even better, less sound leaking in means I don't have to listen as loudly, which helps even more. Since I'm regularly taking public transit this is pretty important to me. But some people seem to think you need massive cans on your head to get good sound quality, or maybe they just want to show off their gear or something, I dunno. You can get awesome sound with IEMs though. MAybe not with the kind of "soundstage" you get with a decent pair of circumaural Sennheisers or Grados or something, but a good set of Shures or Etymotics with whatever tips fit you most comfortably are good enough that you won't really care. I have big-ass Sennheisers and some Grados for use at home but I use Shures on the go and they're just fine.

I agree that listening loud is great and gets you pumped, but maybe it's just 'cos I'm older, but I don't think you should bother other people with your musical tastes. :)

i turn my music up to the point where i can't hear anything except my music, and i will admit in some cases me having to turn up the volume to max is the only way i can listen to my music in peace. I think its amazing how i turn up my music to tune people out, and those same people ask me to lower my music.

Loud iPods are annoying, but if you think that's as bad as it gets, you gotta live in a college dorm for a semester or two.

There's always some jerk who HAS to listen to T-Pain some other made for ringtone garbage at full volume so the rest of the dorm can hear it.

And its even worse when that person is your roommate.
