Well, as my 19th B-day is approaching, I can finally realize my dream of getting a tattoo.

I don't want something ridiculous, just on my shoulders, and I was thinking something along the lines of my family crest (dad's from Portugal so I have a legit one) or a Brazilian flag, or maybe even a combination of both?

So what do you guys think? Seen any intersting tattoos that looked epic lately that aren't videogame/ iPod related?

Ideally you'd have found a design you like on your 18th, and stuck it on your wall for a year to ensure it's not something you'll get bored of seeing. I guess something like a family crest or a flag won't get old or seem gimmicky so that seems the safest thing to go for in my opinion.

This exactly, I knew for three years and had it drawn up just waiting for thr right time. I decided to do it when I visited the UK. Got it for about $200 less then what I would have paid back home.

My rule for getting tattoos is a combination of this, and also getting it done as a temp or in henna (henna last longer, cheaper, but no colour) for a few months first (you'd need to reapply it a couple of times).

I have a tattoo on my right shoulder of the S from the band Sepultura (Google "sepultura s" and you should see it).

I liked the band, but it wasn't why i got it at all. Numerous reasons, but in the end, I only like tribal tattoos. I seem to have a 'draw' towards aboriginal/native arts/symbols/etc.

Anyway, get something that has some meaning to you, and something you won't regret in 10 years. Its been 16 years for me since i've had it, and i've never regretted it a day in my life. Only wish I had gotten it bigger than i did.

Whatever you do, dont get a tribal tattoo or a japanese/chinese symbol unless you are those things. It just makes you look douche-y. Like you know those buff white guys at the gym with asian symbols all over them and they have no idea what they mean.

Pretty much what everybody else said, wont get tired of it, has meaning, blah blah.

Personally Im a huge fan of Alice In Chains and was one day thinking of getting some of my favorite lyrics on my arm, just like 10 words or so. But whatever has meaning to you. Like this:

Don't get a tattoo just because you want one. That's a recipe for regret (or a very painful and scarring removal).

Don't get me wrong, I love tattoos and have a few (I'd be covered in them if I had the money), even on my forearms.

If you don't get one for a good reason, you'll regret it, especially if you're 18. At that age, your tastes will change a lot over next few years and you'll end up hating it. I can promise you that.

The better approach is waiting until you have an idea for a tattoo that you love and then decide to get it. Don't decide first then find a tattoo you like. Otherwise, remember this post when they're lasering it off.
