I agree, this could be kind of cool, but what about apps that get pulled before you go and download them, and never get back because of legal troubles or some other issues? Or what if the developers decide to just give up on the app? It's not like music, where a popular artist can write a song pretty quickly, sing it, and put it on an album with 10+ other songs. Each app can take months to develop, not to mention the cost. Some developers just give up.

One thing that's great about digital distribution is that there's no need for pre-orders; they will never run out of copies.

This is exactly why there isn't pre ording for apps.

Yah that's what I was thinking...

What's the point of preordering with DD?

why preorder? just buy it when it is released...

also, the approval system is inconsistent unlike things like movies and songs

This exactly... Usually I'm not a dick, but this is the most ridiculous thread I have seen in a long time. I don't even think it's worthy of any sort of discussion...

Which is why retailers hate digital distribution. I love it though if it's done correctly. Steam FTW :D

Steam is awful, and a piss poor example.

    Digital has its advantages:

    Costs are very low,
    Can buy whenever, wherever,
Apps are updated in real time, always the latest version.

    BUT

and I know this will sound crazy to developers out there, it would be nice to be able to sell any unwanted apps you have.

You buy an app, use it, then delete when finished with.

It's not so bad with the iPhone as the games are sooo cheap anyway, but it would still be nice to reduce the size of my iTunes app library tho and sell some of the older apps. It'll never happen and im not that fussed about it just would be nice.

That's why I would never purchase games via download on xbox live. I'd rather have a physical copy.

But its not really about the games side of things.

This is the context i mean:

I purchase Copilot live for £26.99

I don't like it very much and wish to purchase an alternative.

All i can do is purchase Tom Tom for £50 odd quid or another sat nav app and remove the Copilot one off my iPhone.

Effectively you are stuck with buying the first app. Or you can purchase a replacement. So this means ive paid for 2 however only use one of them.

This is not a major thing and will never change, just my opinion and what I feel.

Its all clever stuff from apple as they will always benefit in the long run.

Why pre-order if the apps never run out? Its unnecessary.

The only reason this works for music is because they throw something in to sweeten the deal, like early access to tour tickets, or an extra song. Apps... nah.

I think it might be a good idea. I know that copies of apps never run being digital and all but due to approval times its nearly impossible to know the exact date until a few days before it is released. people could pre order a game so the second it is released iTunes will automatically download it and tell you. makes things a bit easier i guess. just a thought
