I'll say no to the PSP Go. Why have another device when I can play PSP quality games on my phone which can also do everything else + more than the PSP.
Because, dispite having PSP quality games, they are not PSP games. lol To each his own for sure, and the iPhone is getting close to PSP quality, but let's be real. It's not there yet lol. It has the power, but not the games yet.
Yeah, that was disappointing for me when I first got my 1000. I was finally forced to get it when Metal Gear Portable Ops came out, and I was shocked to see how bad the ghosting was. I also got GTA when I got my PSP, and the screen was laughably bad. The main characters legs looked like a huge blur. I'd have to disagree there. The iPhone isn't even close to the PSP in terms of game quality and quantity, and I doubt it ever will be. Devs just aren't going to be willing to put that much into a game, and get so little from it. Until it is fine for a game to launch at $20-40 on the app store, there aren't going to be many PSP quality ones.
no way am i going to get this. no UMD, smaller screen, awkward analog position(imo), no removable battery, etc. without the UMD, everything will have to be downloaded. meaning, instead of a 30 minute trip to the store, you will spend about 2 hours just to download a game on the go.
there is no way in hell that i would ever think of buying this. the analog stick is in a really awkward position and this thing looks like it will be the same exact crap as the regular PSP
Well, the analog stick has been pretty badly placed in all models. When I used to play it a lot, my left hand always hurt.
What else does it offer other than a 'modern sliding design' and a 'badly positioned analog stick'? It doesn't have better graphics, so what else can it do? A part of me thinks that Sony are jumping on the 'casual gaming' market band wagon in order to compete with the DS/DSi. I suppose the sliding design is going to appeal to 7 year olds (aka the intended DS market).
Complete and utter nonsense. PSN is available through your PC via Sony's MediaGo program. Think of it as their version of iTunes software as a portal to the online iTunes store. Same deal. Using that, I've been able to download stuff like Final Fantasy VII onto my PSP (hooked up to the PC via USB) in a little under 10 minutes. And that's a legit "over a gig" sized game (1.2 GB, iirc). Now, I understand that UMDs are 1.5GB in size...but here's a little secret: the vast majority of PSP games are far less than that in size. Most could fit on a CD-ROM with quite a lot of room to spare if it were possible (in other words, they're usually about 500MB in size or so). Seriously. Hell, I've actually downloaded one or two PSP games via PSN (Guilty Gear for one) and that took me less than 5 minutes total. Of course, if you download through the PSP itself, then, yeah, it'll take longer. But through MediaGo? 5-15 minutes at most.
Actually, the sliding design would appeal more to the hipster teenage and young adult crowd. It's the same sort of design used in the Sidekick brand of cell phones. So, really, this is more of Sony's misguided attempt to compete with iPhone/touch (which, again, they really AREN'T in competition with...but stupidity, via net rumors and innuendo, apparently overrules common friggin' sense and years of market research and industry norms in this day and age - see the current misreading of the "power of FREE" for another example of this phenomena). It's not they're attempt to appeal to 7 year olds at all as that's really never been Sony's target demographic, and the price alone puts it well out of the range of that demo, which, ironically, was part of the problem for the PSP from the original release. Conclusion: Sony never learns. It's like Sega passed on the mantle of video game hardware industry idiots when they left the hardware market (god bless 'em, and Sega fan dyed in Sonic blue though I am, the creative side of the company was where the genius existed, not the business minds). Anyway...what does it offer? Internal storage. Might have some other bells and whistles that most current PSP owners wouldn't care about at all. Apparently the battery life is the same, but honestly it should be better as there's no optical drive/w motor to run. It's not worth the asking price...but as P.T. Barnum said: There's a sucker born every minute.
Depends on how you define "PSP quality". There have, after all, been some craptacular PSP games and some very stellar iPhone/touch games. But quality is subjective at best. If you're speaking production costs/value...well...honestly...that was the whole problem with PSP to begin with. Why in the good name of all that is holy in business (the bottom line) would developers wish to gamble on developing for a portable game system that carries with it near home console game development costs when it's direct competitor (DS) carried with it the traditional lower cost/lower need to sell a bunch of software to break even paradigm of the portable game system market? Answer: They didn't. That's why most flocked the hell away from PSP. Those that stayed did so only due to the fortunes in the JP market, where, due to Japan becoming more portable game system and mobile platform centric than home centered, PSP has met with some pretty good success. Now, however, Sony has "re-strategized". And through that they've gotten some devs to come on board with increased development. Which means, knowing Sony, developer "incentives" (money under the table). Which means more focus on the worldwide market as a whole.
Comparing the worst psp games with the best idevice games isn't helpful at all. Both systems have hordes of crap (just look at the front page of touch arcade today; the same cheap, shallow crap being repackaged a million times over), but the best games available on the idevice don't even approach the best games on the psp. Having said that, the best games on the PSP tend to be watered down versions of much better console/pc games, that aren't really suited to portable devices. Which is why I gave away my last PSP with no regrets.
I don't think so...sick of Sony's shenanigans. This'll be the 4th PSP iteration. And by the way: how can they get rid of the UMD drive and the battery life is still the same as the models with the UMD drive?!?!?! Talk about bad engineering...Microsoft is kicking Sony's but left and right this console generation (and I think Sony deserves it the way they've been acting). Sorry for the rant. =0)
Hmmm. I'll have to disagree on that one. The handheld gaming market is entirely different from the home console market. Microsoft has been kicking no butt in that area at all, although there is the Windows mobile, but that's more of an iPhone competitor than a PSP competitor or DS competitor. Unless there's going to be an Xbox handheld release, it's not beating Sony in every area, but I'm sure it would be much better than PSP.
It could really happen at any time, but Microsoft consitantly denounces wanting to join the mobile market competition. Which is fine honestly, I have plenty of hand-held systems, so I don't really need another one (as awesome sounding as an xbox themed mobile gaming device would be). So I don't really see them with releasing anything anytime soon, if at all. Where my twitter update on xbox live damnit?!?!?
No for me, I have a PSP-2000 and I'm happy. Though I'm excited about the games coming out for its launch, Gran Turismo and LittleBigPlanet =]
Yeah im looking foward to that new Metal Gear Solid too. I can't wait for Final Fantasy Disidia too. Downloaded the demo and that game is f*cking sick. I love PSP games, I just don't like what Sony is doing for the system. Phantasy Star Portable ftw
I'm sure they'll have some plan for PSP owners upgrading to the PSPGo. Did you know Phantasy Star Portable 2 is coming out this winter? There's so many good Japanese PSP games coming out: God Eater, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Phantasy Star Portable 2, Naruto Shippuden (I had to like put that out ;D). For use we get Soul Calibur, Tekken 6, SOCOM FTB3 (with 4 player co-op), and Assassin's Creed (thats going to be the BEST portable Assassin's Creed game).
I think both you and spiffyone make very good points. Part of the challenge is how you define "good." Is the game fun? Innovative? Designed to work well in a "mobile" setting? By those standards, there are a few games on the iPlatform that (IMHO) hold their own with pretty much against anything on the PSP. Depth is certainly something that is lacking in many App Store games, but, as you mentioned, very deep games are not necessarily well suited for playing in a portable device (with all the distractions and stop/starts). Then there's length of play, which is, again in my opinion, overrated, as it is often achieved with repetitive gameplay or long levels with limited checkpoints. Your last point is key, though: if what you're looking for is depth of play and great graphics, there are so many better options for the PC (or consoles) at comparable prices that it it's not clear to me why I would choose a PSP game over them. In any event, I decided that PSP was not for me when I tried (really, really tried) to get into Final Fantasy VII, one of the games held up as the pinnacle of the platform. The fact that it bored me to tears made it clear that I was playing in the wrong playground, as it were -- though I still love God of War and The Warriors.
You just made my f*cking day, man. I am a huge Phantasy Star fan (Have been since the Sega Genesis days) and I have kept up on every single one. Had NO idea that a 2 was coming out! I'll have to look on it. Hopfully it will have full online multiplayer instead of just Ad Hoc. Do you know if it just expands on the PSU universe? or is it in a new system? Just wondering if you have any real quick info. I'm at work so I can't nessisarily hunt for a lot of info on it right now. Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy VII to death. Easily one of my favourites in the series, but why don't you try a PSP specific game? Like God of War, Phantasy Star Portable, or Star Ocean, or anything like that? Playing PS1 games that you have beaten time and time again are fun, but it's not the best thing out there when new shi!t is coming out for it. you know? Just my .02
I have played -- and loved -- God of War on the PSP (easily one of my favorite games on any platform). I've been curious about Little Big Planet PSP -- but mainly because I'm not planning to invest on a major console and it's not available for the Mac or PC. My point, though, is that if I'm looking for a beautiful and immersive RPG, something like Oblivion or Fallout 3 seems like a much better (and, likely, cheaper) choice than anything on the PSP.
