yeah, silent hill 2 is definitely a masterpiece, but i still think the first one edges it out slightly. and it wasn't really much of a decline...i mean it was all still good up to number 3. it's the fourth one where it completely dropped off into the fail zone. homecoming is probably the best of the worst silent hills, though.

i personally had no problems running through silent hill 1 again on my psp. you can completely customize every single button, down to the d-pad and the analog stick directions. so really, the interface is as bad as you personally make it. obviously it's not as perfect as having a dual shock controller, but i still found it entirely playable.

fatal frame is excellent, but the weakest series of the bunch mentioned so far. most people agree that the second one is the best, so if you can only track one down or have limited funds, that would be the one to go with.

now clock tower is the supreme example of survival horror. you don't get guns or swords or really anything to help you. you can use temporary items once like a broom you find up against a wall, but after that it's broken and the chase continues. and the chase is always on...you can't kill your pursuer. it's like a slasher simulator, and you're being chased by jason from friday the 13th. very intense, and packed to the brim with classic moments. be sure to play both clock tower 1(super famicom) and clock tower 2(psx). to clear up the confusion, clock tower 1 in the states is actually the sequel that was made for playstation. the US never got the super nintendo one, so they just ignored it and called its sequel "Clock Tower" in the states. final fantasy fans have experienced a similar situation. either way, both are really really good. if you can't get past the archaic graphics, capcom went ahead and did a spiritual sequel that is practically a blatant rip off titled Haunting Ground for the playstation 2. also a severely underrated and excellent survival horror game.

I'l play around with the controls of SH1 -- I was really looking forward to playing it and it was very disappointing to me that I couldn't quite get it to work. SH3 was good, but I though the story got a little oblique (and not for a good reason). SH4 had tons of potential, but it got old and repetitive fast -- it's the only SH game that I couldn't get myself to finish. Clock tower sound like something else; will have to do due diligence on that one.

I still think that the first 15 minutes in Bioshock were the scariest moments of gaming ever...

    Doing nothing of importance.

Bioshock was creepy man... I love that game so much... That was one of the best FPS games I'd played in a long time. I stayed up until 6:30 in the morning playing it after all my friends fell asleep (I was over my friends house and my other friend brought the game). I then woke up at 7:30 and proceded to play until about 10, and I wasn't even tired. That caught up with me later, but that's another story. Either way, fantastic and creepy game.

As for Clock Tower, I came across it while looking for the PS1 version. I accidentally got a translated version of the SNES one, which proceded to scare the crap outta me.

Bioshock is particularly scary if you have any Ayn Rand fanatics in your life. And when you realize how many of them are still in positions of power.

yeah the snes translated rom is really the only way to play it if you're english. hiiiiighly recommended. to add to the confusion, they also did a small remake for the psx, as well as a true sequel.

...then they did clock tower:the enemy within, which is still in the style of the old clock towers, but totally sucks. and then they followed it up with clock tower 3(technically 4) in the states, and that's just a complete abomination.

the graphics might not be good anymore, but the first two clock towers are really top notch, and would work so well with the iphone interface.
