I've been testing a new game this weekend and talking to the developer for a while now about their new game, Rogue Star. It's a space combat/trading game in the vein of Elite, Freelancer and all those lovely games that normally don't make it off PC and onto iOS. It's been 5 years in the making The developer's a really nice guy who worked on Die Hard Trilogy, the Fable series and other really cool stuff. They've already submitted the game to Apple so there's not a huge amount of time until release which is great for impatient people like me! It's a fully premium game, most likely launching in the ballpark of £3.99/$4.99 as he's very much a lover of old school games with no hidden fees. They have plans to build on the game post-launch and are committed to creating a community for Rogue Star which I absolutely love the sound of. This is directly from James, of RedBreast Studio, discussing how Rogue Star plays: Here's the latest trailer: Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel I'll update this with a load of screenshots I've taken during gameplay and impressions in a minute. The developer has stated that he'll likely be along soon to answer questions as well.
Wow. This look good! Instabuy for me as I have been waiting for a proper Elite successor. Fingers crossed for next week if it has gone to Apple.
Wow. Thanks for the heads up Pete! These iOS games just keep getting better and better in design and scope!
Hi guys and gals, My name's James and I'm the Creative Director behind Rogue Star. PeteOzzy has done a great job of introducing it so I just wanted to pop in and say hi. It's great to start seeing peoples' reactions to game, I hope they continue to be as positive as Pete's! I'm very happy to field questions on the title. I've really tried to change peoples' perceptions of what's possible on mobile (touch screen) devices, so please shoot me any queries you may have. I'm also happy to talk about my history and the development process itself, it's been a rollercoaster ride for sure!
If you can nail the feeling of dogfighting in space then you have a sale here. I like how the characters are animated when they speak. That really adds to the believability of the world. Thanks
this beauty must be mine asap!!! just hope it doesn't take the same road as Tiny Trek (in almost 2 years we've seen ony preview trailers, and still do not know when it comes out!!!)
Sorry for taking so long to leave impressions, it's been a busy weekend! I've only had about an hour into Rogue Star but I fully intend to play it more. From what I've played though, I'm hugely excited to explore every nook and cranny. I've been contacted by a fair few developers since starting the website but this is easily my joint favourite moment (The Oddworld devs were a huge surprise!) and it's a game I'm super excited to experience. What I've had enough time with to mention is the combat; it's perfect on touchscreens. It's such a hard thing to get 3D movement right on mobile yet there's a great mix of simplicity and streamlining without sacrificing depth of strategy. You can adjust the power of your ship's systems as your dogfighting - raise your shields as they close in, charge your engines to increase maneuverability and get behind them and then boost your weapons to destroy them. All it takes is a touch on the appropriate coloured square at the side of the screen, easily done while turning and/or firing, the same is true of accelerating. The other stand-out moment has to be the characters. As Geminieye62 says, all the alien profiles are animated and reflect both their opinion of you and the species' traits. They can be jovial, aggressive, dim-witted and more but they're all creative and feel convincing. It has AAA production values with all the detail and attention of an indie work of pure love. There's so much more I need to play before I can cover other areas but I think you're all capable of checking the screenshots and trailer to make your own opinions rather than read my waffle. I don't want to lavish too much praise as I'm aware it might sound like I'm being part of the development team lol, but I can't help it - the guys here that know me, know I get very passionate about games I'm enjoying!
Buttons for mostly everything with an analogue stick for movement control. I'll get a screenshot of the controls up soon! It's very non-linear; several missions available at most times from each space station. I've handled trade missions, taken out pirates and been asked to escort convoys so far and that was in a small amount of gameplay. Not to mention all the trading and auctions you can take part in, in the meantime!
look amazing... the animation, effects, physics and everything tells that the dev did put in a lot of attention into every small details as far as the trailer shows. very stunning work there coming from an indie. looks like a day 1!
My God!!!! I was waiting for this for a long time!!! I tought it was abandoned... Great to see it again!!! I have read it is submitted to Apple... Is it correct? So in a coupe of weeks everyone cold play this beauty???
