I've wondered if it's fake. Seems almost too good to be true. I am cautiously optimistic though... Been waiting a long time for a really thorough action game.
Why would Toucharcade's senior editor pull a stupid prank on his site's most avid readers and forum posters? Doesn't make any sense.
...what are you talking about? The guys working here at TA think it's going to be a real game and one coming soon. The "developers" of the "game" would be the only people pulling any kind of prank if the game turns out to be bullshit.
I've learned my lesson about giving into hype, haha. Not at all what I was hoping it to be, but if it turns out to be real (and free) I'm sure I'll give it a download.
Actually, it makes perfect sense. Look, I don't want to be debbie downer here, I'm just trying to keep your expectations in check. Read that press release again and tell that game isn't the answer to every prayer you have ever had about the iOS platform. Let me give my guess as to what really happened. The majority of iOS journalists are at WWDC. One night they go out drinking/eating/partying/whatever and get to talking. It's no secret that you guys are a bunch of cheap bastards who want the world for 99 cents or less. In fact, it's basically the root of all complaints about this community. Lets say the discussion turns to the community and how the awesome games they got to see today won't be appreciated by a good portion of you because they will be above your price threshold. Then someone says "Yeah, its like they want a game that has 200 hours of gameplay, expandability, characters that carry over to other games, and competitive multiplayer, all for free." And then someone says "Well, why don't we give it to them." They come up with a ridiculous concept for a game, register a domain, and start a circle jerk of retweets hyping the game up. The rest is history. My guess is, if anything does get released, it's that space invaders clone that was thrown together in Game Salad. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this secret group of developers, whose company name doesn't show up on Google for anything other than the press release and this thread, who have spent 18 months working on this top secret project. A project that has zero monetization and promises the world for free. A project so precious to the developers that they registered the domain 3 days ago. A project that no one outside the iOS community has even heard about. Come on guys, you aren't that gullible...are you?
yup, I hope it's not a prank obviously, but there really is very little doubt in my mind anymore that it isn't. ah well, got plenty of good games to look forward to. edit: crex is right, BELIEVE!!!!
A prank at the biggest event of the year, thereby making them the biggest laughing stock of the development industry, as well as them losing all credibility for the future...? Maybe, but I don't believe it. If anything, it just won't be that fun or that graphically intensive. I'm not keeping my expectations high, truthfully multiplayer only games aren't my type unless they are truly innovative, so I could care less if this is a flop. Oh well, whatever happens, happens.
Boy, I bet you hope so! Then you and mobiletechreview can swoop in and steal the top spot in the iOS journo-game. Why don't you try this on instead: They prank you, the developers love it because it makes fun of the section of iOS gamers that they privately despise, and everything continues as normal. TouchArcade remains the best and most popular iOS blog, developers continue to give them exclusive looks at things (and generally pine for their attention), and you continue to post on the forums. That seems much more likely than those who were upset by this banding together, singing kumbaya, and overthrowing the evil Hodapp for making fun of their irrational expectations. But what do I know?
Ask yourself this question: If there is a public press release promising the things this game is promising, why isn't on TA's front page? NDA or not, the press release is now in the public domain, so TA can talk about anything in the press release. Why haven't they? They certainly haven't strayed from hyping an announcement like this in the past. Prank'd
Fine Crex, I'll meet you half way. You believe this is real and I'll believe you're an idiot. Then we can have a race to see which belief comes true first. This game is also free.
A small part of me wants to believe the game exists and will be awesome. From the cryptic meandering around it's initial hinting, it'd better look as good as Infinity Blade (if it's real). The larger part of me feels this may well be a prank or some hastily piece of thrown together, cobbled retro garbage. I like my iOS games to evolve graphically and rule the handheld/mobile visual roost. Pushing technological boundaries. If this is some overhyped, underwhelming game or a prank, TouchGen will become my new destination for iOS. I don't have a soft spot for mean spirited hijinks. I'd lose a lot of faith in Hodapp, whose editorial skills surpass many gaming journalists. It'd be an egregious abuse to the community who becomes inspired by his insight. A slap in the face, mistimed April fools joke...2 months too late. Let's wait and see.
Dude, freakin' epic. I'll be shocked as hell if any of this garbage is real. I figured it was BS from the beginning, but that press release confirmed it for me.
Why is everyone so shocked? Hodapp doesn't make it a secret that he despies the cheap bastards that are the root of why this platform a laughing stock for most of the gaming industry. He mocks the hell of these idiots and this is an excellent way to prove it. Promise the world for no cost or IAP and see how many morons buy it hook, line and sinker.
The problem with that theory is that the hype from the game originally came from it being lauded as the next evolution of the Infinity Blade formula. We didn't even know it was priced as free until late Friday afternoon. So if Hodapp was making a prank, he'd only annoy the avid game fans in the Upcoming forums, not the 99 cent gang.
